[IMPORTANT NOTICE!] June 2013 Edexcel GCE Mathematics Exams

Some people may already be informed about the situation regarding Edexcel GCE Mathematics June 2013 exams. If not, now you know.
The papers we were meant to be sitting this June 2013 have been replaced with reserve papers
(only Edexcel GCE Maths). Something similar to this happened last year.

The following is an extract from Edexcels website.

We have been alerted to a potential security breach relating to some of our Edexcel GCE Mathematics papers and therefore are replacing a number of papers.
The examination papers affected are:
Date of examination

Paper code

Paper Title

6 June 2013 (am)6678/01Mechanics, M2
10 June 2013 (am)6679/01Mechanics, M3
10 June 2013 (am)6667/01Further Pure Mathematics, FP1
13 June 2013 (am)6665/01Core Mathematics, C3
18 June 2013 (am)6666/01Core Mathematics, C4
21 June 2013 (am)6668/01Further Pure Mathematics, FP2
24 June 2013 (pm)6669/01Further Pure Mathematics, FP3

No other GCE Mathematics papers have been affected.

A box of exam papers has been lost during the dispatch process by the carrier responsible for our distribution. We are confident that the extent of the breach is limited in scope, but we want to be certain that the integrity of these examinations is not compromised in any way. We will therefore be issuing replacement papers for these examinations to all centres with entries.

The replacement papers have been developed in advance through our normal processes and meet our usual, stringent assessment requirements. We also have an established procedure to ensure that a new paper is distributed to schools and colleges. This means that no student could gain advantage from sight of the breached papers, and ensures that examinations will be fair to all students who have worked hard to prepare themselves for them.

Q:Would the reserve papers be any harder/easier?
A: Well Edexcel have clearly stated that "replacement papers have been developed in advance through our normal processes and meet our usual, stringent assessment requirements". IMO I think that they will be of the same standard. There is nothing to worry about and you should go about revising as normal.

EDIT: 14/06/2013
TO BE HONEST I DID HAVE A FEELING SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD HAPPEN WITH ATLEAST ONE OF THE MATHS PAPERS. PRIOR TO THIS ANNOUCEMENT BY EDEXCEL THERE WERE QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT THE ALTERATION IN DIFFICULITY REGARDING THE RESERVE PAPERS. EDEXCEL HAVE CLEARY STATED ON THEIR WEBSITE THAT “The replacement papers have been developed in advance through our normal processes and meet our usual, stringent assessment requirements. We also have an established procedure to ensure that a new paper is distributed to schools and colleges. This means that no student could gain advantage from sight of the breached papers, and ensures that examinations will be fair to all students who have worked hard to prepare themselves for them.” BUT THIS HAS CERTAINLY NOT BEEN THE CASE. FROM WHAT I HAVE GATHERED, CANDIDATES WHO SAT THIS PAPER have been SHOCKED IN TERMS OF HOW A NORMAL C3 OR EDEXCEL MATHS PAPER IS STRUCTURED.

REASON TO WHY I THINK THE PAPER WAS OF THIS DIFFICULTLY:
THE TREND THAT USUALLY (NOT ALWAYS THE CASE! BUT USUALLY!) FOLLOWS IS THAT A HARD PAPER E.G IN JAN IS FOLLOWED BY A Relatively EASIER PAPER IN JUNE. SO it could have of been that the original paper was of “normal standard” but because of the mishap THAT TOOK PLACE, it was replaced with the reserve paper. which if the trend was TRUE, it meant that it would have been of a harder standard than typically required.

BUT…In fairness…in recent exams Edexcel have decided to tweak questions a little therefore making the questions require a little more thought to access it. So Edexcel could argue that… But it still doesn't explain why thousands of students complained. It’s not as if all were unprepared.

ARE the new papers that hard

I hope the style isn't too different from the normal papers. I stress and muck it up when papers are different from what I have done in past papers :afraid:

Wasn't sure how many people were aware of this, was only pointed it out by a friend who had a rather "wacky" M3 exam!

So basically M2, M3, FP1, FP2, FP3, C3 and C4 papers are all being replaced because someone (don't be rude now) managed to lose a box of them...

Apparently the replacement papers tend to have more "interesting" questions than normal.

A nicely worded letter. I do not agree on the Mechanics side personally, I believe anyone who knew M1 thoroughly could have done that paper, I tripped up multiple times on it but I was able to recover when I actually read the question (lesson learnt that exam day). The C3 on the other hand was nothing like I have ever seen before, it was diabolical, I was quite interested at first it was a challenge but coming to the end I was rushing and frantic. They do need to question as to how they are going to tackle this. In my eyes I think we should all sit another paper... the same paper as it is not fair on the 60 candidates (and I also want another stab at C3) to have altered grade boundaries.
I didn't think Edexcel meant "Changing Lives" literally.
