I am a bit confused with this topic. I understand that when bacteria are placed in a biodigester, under anaerobic conditions, it breaks down the sugars in the manure/waste and produces methane (biogas). Is this process fermentation? If so, then what is the actual definition of fermentation, or to ferment - I thought it meant Yeast breaking down carbohydrates which produces ethanol?
The breakdown of any carbs in the absence of oxygen which produces alcohol and/or gas is called fermentation. Yeast is just one example, the production of biogas is another.
