I'm a first year at the University of Bedfordshire - You have questions?

Hi there,

Obviously a lot of you are asking the same questions about the uni/uni life in general.

I'm a first year Psychology student who's just finished his last exam. I'm currently based at the Luton campus and I'm staying in the Student Village opposite the university. I've indulged in all aspects of university life so feel free to ask me anything.

If you have have any questions, post below (or if it's something more personal, you can message me directly!) and if common themes crop up (as I'm sure they will) I'll edit this post and create an aggregate post here with the information.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Accommodation

1.) "What are the Fitzroy/Wenlock accommodations like?"

Out of all the accommodation, they're definitely the nicest, although with that comes a greater financial cost. I currently pay £588 per month for my residence here, although on a 42 week contract you do get a month free. For more information about The Student Village, please visit here: http://www.studentvillagebeds.com/index.html

2.) "Can I have my friends as flatmates?"

Yes, you can. On the sign-up form, you can list your friends as your preferred flatmates.

3.) "What things are provided in halls, such as ironing board, hoover, stuff like that?"

In the communal area you'll have access to: Fridge/freezer, mop, microwave, oven, grill. There is no hoover in Fitzroy, you have to rent one from reception (free) and that is a pain at times. Also, bring a drying rack for your kitchen top. Also there was no toaster provided, but you can pick one up very cheaply from the Mall, there's an Argos and a Wilkinsons that most students get all their stuff from.

4.) "When did you move in?"

I moved in on the 22nd of September.

5.) "Should I buy a mini fridge?"

Entirely up to you. I didn't buy one, but if you decide you want one, don't buy one with the idea that you'll need it for 'storage space'; the fridges here are huge. However if you're worried about pesky flatmates stealing your milk etc. that's another matter.

6.) "Got any advice for living with other people?"

Yes. If you are a quiet person, please specify that you want to live with other quiet people and state that you won't be 'up all night'. Even if you're on the fence, trust me, it is far easier for a loud-ish person to live with quiet people, than for a quiet person to live with four loud people. Also, bring some earplugs because there will be times when you just want to study/nap and general noise might make that hard(I personally recommend these, they're fantastic!)

7.) "What kind of maintenance does the flat require?"

The flats are pretty sturdy and don't require much attention whatsoever and there is a dedicated maintenance service that you can book through the accommodation portal if anything goes wrong. However do make sure you know how to defrost a freezer, as this is one job maintenance won't do for you and if too much ice builds up, you'll find the compartment doors snap easily; Also bear in mind you pay a £200 deposit which you'll be wanting back!

8.) "Do you all food shop together, or individually?"

In my flat (and pretty much all I've come across), we shopped individually. However you might want to discuss this with your flatmates if it's your preference.

[I'll continue updating this thread as your questions come in, but for any more general questions you can visit the Student Village Website. Also, if you want to send a query to the Student Village itself, you can do so here and of course you are still more than welcome to send me questions too!]

Student Life

1.) "What is 'Freshers Week' exactly?"

Freshers week is designed for you to 'get a feel' for your new environment and settle in. You'll attend a couple of orientation sessions, be shown how the I.T systems work and also the library. You will also get the chance to socialise with your new coursemates/flatmates and, in general, you'll have a lot of fun.

2.) "Did you drink a lot at uni during Freshers?"

Myself, yes. There are always student deals on at the local pubs and many more so during Freshers week... in fact I'm still missing a few chunks of what happened on one particular night. However that is not to say you have to drink, please don't feel inclined to just because everyone else is (peer pressure) - Two of my friends didn't touch a drop of alcohol and they had just as much fun (and had the added bonus of being able to remember it all) and it was cheaper for them, too!

3.) "How do you handle lectures?"

The lectures here are Powerpoint presentations for the most part with your given lecturer 'fleshing out' some of the main points, some even have amusing anecdotes. The lectures are then uploaded to the university's online portal called 'BREO' from which they are accessible to all students.

The majority of students at uni take down notes whilst in lectures, whether that be on paper, or on a laptop - some even choose to record the entire lectures on dictaphones Personally, I bought a decent netbook and it's a pretty constant companion of mine at uni.

I'll say this now though, you will lose your enthusiasm for 'on the fly' note-taking as the year goes on... particularly if it's 9am and you didn't sleep well the previous night... But hey, as long as you're up to date with what you should know, that's all that matters.

I've just been down to reception to ask.

The answer is yes, you can live with your friend providing you both name each other as preferred flatmates on the application sheet (I think under 'preferences')

hey, sorry to bother you again but is there any difference between stockwood hall and wingate hall within the accomodation.

How does the roomate pull in work exactly?

No bother at all, that's what this thread's for

Basically there is no difference, they're just the different names for the blocks of flats within Fitzroy, see here .

When you sign up, if you list your friend(s) you want to be with, you'll be more likely to end up with them. It should be on the sign-up form.

However if you have further questions, you can contact them here

Hey, I've got a few questions that I wanna ask. I'll just start with a few first though and ask you some more based on the answers .
What things are provided in halls, such as ironing board, hoover, stuff like that?
When did you have to move into halls?
What's the timetable like?
How popular is psychology?

I think I answered all of these in the PM, but in terms of amenities, you can read the full list here:

"The bedroom will have a single bed, desk, chair, wardrobe and curtains. You will need to bring your own bedding, cooking utensils, plates and cutlery. You may want to wait until you meet your flatmates as you may be able to buy some items together. You can buy a bedding pack for £35 when you arrive. This consists of a duvet, pillow, sheet, pillow case and duvet cover."

There's also a general FAQ here:

I've seen the list, but is that all that they provide you with? No ironing board, no hoover, no mop. Homely things like that?

You have to go and rent out hoovers from reception (they've got about 10) and you can only keep them for an hour, but this is free.

All flats come with a mop.

No ironing board, sorry!

I bought all my stuff from Wilkinsons and Argos when I arrived (literally everything.)

Yes you are allowed mini fridges. Is it worth it? Err, I suppose it is if you don't want to leave your room or you think your housemates are helping themselves to your milk etc. - If you have one, you might as well bring it, but not for the sake of storage space, the fridges are those giant 'American' ones, they're huge.

Oh I won't bother getting one then. For food shopping, did you all put together or just go out and buy what you want individually? Oh, and what's the nearest supermarket?

We all bought our own food individually and each allocated ourselves a shelf in the fridge and freezer. It's like that in pretty much every flat I've heard of so far

Iceland. It's a student's best friend. I live on £40 a week (for food), I could easily do it on 15 just by shopping at Iceland. It's about 50ft away from the accommodation!

If you walk into town (5 minutes trip) you'll come to the mall. It's got a Tesco and an M&S as well as some smaller shops like a butchers etc.

Ok, that's fine. What's the ensuite like? Has it got a shower curtain and what colour is it?
