Private universities?

I've been looking into this recently, and there seem to be a few private or 'independent' universities now operating within the UK. What's the consensus surrounding these? Like private schools, do people think they might offer a higher standard of teaching? Are they full of private school kids?

So far I've come across:

BPP
Regent's College London
University of Buckingham
College of New Humanities

Does anyone have any experience of these?

First of all in one sense all UK universities are private, in that they are independent educational charities. Having said that, there are several universities which receive no government funding and as such have a different level of independence.

BPP, Regent's, Buckingham, University of Law, IFS School of Finance and Ashridge have degree awarding powers.

New College of Humanities is not in any sense a university. It is a private college preparing students for London University degrees.

BPP and UofLaw are full of intending lawyers. The others are full of internationals.

Not quite, Student Finance will only give out tuition loans of up to £6000 a year to go to a private university

This. If you're paying for a service, it is private.

Quite right, Student Finance England will provide loans/maintenance up to £6000 to eligible students, which will not cover the full programme cost at Regent's University London.
We do however have a number of scholarships which you may be interested in looking into.

We are an independent not-for-profit University. This means that we do not receive government funding. In addition, our profits are invested back into the facilities for the benefit of our students.

We offer a personalised experience for students; we have a high number of contact hours, and small tutorial sizes, and a personalised career service, including assistance with arranging internships.

With around 4,500 students, it is small enough to know your classmates and lecturers, and yet big enough that you get the opportunity to interact with a wide range of different students. We also have a very international student body, with over 140 different nationalities represented on campus.

Please let me know if you have any other questions

College of New Humanities I'm staunchly opposed to. Grayling the self-proclaimed 'man of the left' setting that up is a disgrace. He says Oxford were turning down too many good private school kids because of the government push to get state school kids in. Quite right as well.

BPP is specialist, in law, accountancy and business. You can get loans I believe, they have a 'law loan' for example.
