Coordindation Number

Ok, i have been through many sources each with contradicting sources :eek:

In terms of A2 AQA chemistry
Is coordination number:

a) The number of ligands around a metal ion

or

b) The number of coordinate bonds a metal ion makes with ligands.

And so with this in mind, what is the coordination number of [Cu(H20)2(C2O4)2] ?

You don't double count double bonds though.....????? Just to clarify, don't think you do but they may officially do so. STrangely they don't ask for coordination numbers in uni level questions!
