Opening paragraph for dissertation

I was wondering whether I can start my dissertation with an anecdote or quotation? Is this too informal?

What kind of quote is it? I'd assume that as long as you reference it appropriately this wouldn't be a problem

I think an anecdote may be all right but I don't think I've ever seen someone start with a quote in a published article for psychology. It may look a bit cheesy unless it's highly relevant.
