Irish PM receives bloody letters

(Reuters) - Ireland's prime minister said he had been sent letters written in blood and been branded a murderer by opponents of his government's plans to allow limited access to abortion, an issue that has polarised the country for decades.

Enda Kenny's government agreed draft legislation in April to allow for limited access to abortion where a woman's life is in danger, including the threat of suicide, following months of protests from both sides of the debate.

The Republic of India condemns what it perceives as a direct threat to the PM of Ireland and it welcomes these planned changes to the conditions for abortion.

The Republic of Ireland wishes to take this opportunity to condemn in the strongest possible terms the actions of those who have sent such letters to Enda Kenny. The abortion reforms have received wide public support, and whilst we respect the right to protest, such letters are unnecessary and threatening to Enda Kenny as well as his family. Such threats are not a proper way for people to express opposition to these plans, and serve only as an affront to democratic decision making. We would also like to note that due to the 1992 ruling of the Cúirt Uachtarach na hÉireann (Supreme Court of Ireland) that Enda Kenny is obliged to propose these changes, and thus should not be targeted personally regardless of people's opinions on the issue.

However, Ireland also recognises the tension caused by the issue of abortion, both to Irish citizens and those of nations such as the Republic of India following the tragic case of Savita Halappanavar. We recognise the failings of the current procedure in this case and are determined to ensure that no woman loses her life as a result of pregnancy. However, whilst every effort will be made to reform existing law around this aim, the Republic of Ireland will not bow to any international pressure to further liberalise abortion law, and asks other states to respect its sovereignty on this matter.

Additionally, the Republic of Ireland would like to request that fellow members of the European Union, and in particular the United Kingdom, cease the practice of offering state abortions to Irish citizens who are not permanent residents of their nations. We view the facilitation of abortions for foreign citizens not only as a waste of resources, but as a direct attack on the rights on our Republic to enforce our own laws within our own territory. Such practice undermines the sovereignty of the Irish state, and should be condemned in the strongest terms.

The Republic of Ireland would further like to remind its fellow states that the head of the Irish Government should properly be referred to as "Taoiseach" rather than the inaccurate anglicised term "Prime Minister".

The Netherlands strongly condemns the actions of the individuals sending the letters, acting in such a way would be detrimental for their cause, and if they really want to make any sort of difference, a civilised debate may be appropriate.

The Netherlands will not be refusing people abortions due to their nationality, and any instance of this in The Netherlands will not be tolerated.
Nigeria condemns this! As the rep from the Netherlands has already said, a debate about the matter would be better.

China condemns this threat on a leader's life strongly, and we hope that the culprits are caught and dealt with.

Malaysia condemns the actions of the senders, citing that no disagreement over a politician's ideologies should warrant such serious circumstances.
