ohooo, that's nice. congrats on your offer!

Thanks . Applying one year after you've graduated is a very good idea if you want unconditional offers . I hope they'll give you an offer too. More international studens can only be good!

Yes, Q300 English Literature at St. Cuths  It's my firm, but I'm still trying to decide between countries. Which college/course are you going for?

Me too! I've applied to Durham AND a swedish university and right now I'm trying to make up my mind. Or, as a matter of fact, not right now... I most likely won't start thinking seriously about it before I get a deadline  Last year I called the university to tell I had changed my mind 45 minutes before the call-over. However, I had basicly made up my mind a couple of weeks earlier...

Where have you been? Not many people have been to the city I live in - there's a distinct reason.

Quite a few places in the US, mainly because my family never went anywhere else, including: all over florida, atlanta, carolina (north and south), new york, boston, pittsburgh, washington D.C, niagara falls, las vegas, arizona, grand canyon, all over california and new mexico. But not virginia yet
silkweed
That's quite a lot. Virginia is very pretty, the autumns are gorgeous, apparently this is why the state slogan is "Virginia is for lovers". But it's a big bible belt state. North Carolina is one of my favourite states - did you go to Chapel Hill? That's one of my favourite towns. I almost picked UNC Chapel Hill over UVA here simply because I loved the place.

Don't believe i have ever been there no. I was only in north carolina for a short while to see a panthers game. Twas a great day

Well,I'll reapply to Cambridge after last years pool followed by rejection.I had promised myself to do so+the reason for my rejection was that I wasn't enough "polished" yet...we'll see this year  But now I'm really hesitating between the two universities (Cam&Durham) - not as if I had any influence on their decision about offering a place for me  - mainly because in Durham I could study a wider range of subjects (Middle Eastern&Spanish studies vs.Combined Social Sciences...)and it would be less hectic as far as I see.Anyway I'm still in the middle of my exams and I should plan this gap year of mine also...last year I applied just to Cambridge for have some experience and didn't even looked at any other universities. This time it's a bit different...but I'm pretty sure, Van Mildert would be the perfect place for me in Durham

Pretty odd really - I'm in a similar situation, but I won't bother going in to all that here. Have you decided what you'll do on your gap year? Will you be in Budapest or the UK?

well,I'll be in the UK,in Spain,in Italy and at Budapest as far as I can see it now :smile:I'll take part in a proficiency language course in the UK and then here at Budapest also at the British Council (perhaps you have already noticed that my mother tongue isn't English :O),then I'd like to go to Granada also for 2 weeks or so to study Spanish a bit more and to Italy to do an advanced language exam. But I'll be here at Budapest in most of my time because I might have two pretty good jobs and one of them is taking part in establishin the first Middle Eastern Studies center in Hungary  an amazing chance of course...

There are lots of International Students at Durham...

I made friends with French,Luxembourgish, Russian and Polish students while learning Spanish.

One of my friends from Chad's is Swedish. Although she's the only actual person I know from Chad's! *Not that unusual given that it's a tiny college!*

Hello!
I'm French and I'm looking for some compatriots!
My parents are worrying about England and Durham, and they don't speak a word of English. It would be great if someone could speak to them...

Where you're from? I'm not a compatriot (I'm swedish), but I lived in Aix last school year and it was very nice . I love french music (well... not all french music, but there are some very good artists)! Unfortunatly is neither my or my parents french brilliant so speaking to your parents would probably make them even more worried  . Hope you find somebody who can help you out!

EDIT: One more question. What is it that your parents worry about?

Hi!
I live in Vitry le Francois, one hour from Paris.
My parents feel wrong because they have never heard of Durham before, we have no idea of what accomodation looks like (castle -I've heard of gloomy moatside? :frown: ), and I'm leaving home all alone...

Durham is amazing, so don't worry!

Moatside isn't brilliant no, but it's being refurbished over the summer so will be all sparkly and nice for October  (well, maybe not sparkly.... )

If you want to convince them about Durham, just tell them that it's got 2 world heritage sites (on a level with the pyramids), is the third oldest university in the country, and The Times says that it's better than both Oxford and Cambridge for English and the best university in the country for 2005 (and has me, which puts it head and shoulders above the rest:wink:. I assume that you're studying English but I could be wrong.

Is my English so bad that I need lessons?
In fact I will read International relations, Russian and Spanish.
It seems that there is far less french people in Durham than in London...

Not at all, your English is far better than my French ever was and better than my German is now (apparently A-level standard). It was just my (false) assumption that because your not English, you'd come to study English. Now I come to think about it this doesn't seem very logical but it did at the time when I was ill and tired.

Paris... nice .

As for your parents not having heard of Durham before... before I went to France I hadn't heard about any french universities but from Sorbonne. I kind of knew there were "Gandes écoles" that were supposed to be good but I didn't know their names (still don't) nor where to find them. That doesn't mean there aren't loads of great Universities in France. However, I do understand you parents worry. Sending a child away to a university they have never heard about can't be too easy. I think my mum worried a bit when I just had been accepted, but then she kind of changed her mind after speaking to some english people at her work who knew a lot about Durham.

As for the accomodation I wouldn't worry too much. I have never seen any accomodation worse than the student houses (or what ever you call it... "cité U") in Grenoble. My teachers told me that the student accomodation provided by the Universities in France was normally of a very bad standard and that most french people chosed other alterenatives like renting an appartement with some friends etc. The standard of the rooms at Chad's were WAY much better than the rooms my friends stayed in in Grenoble (not to speak of the kitchen in Grenoble... ). This may of cause not be true for all colleges in Durham (even though I do believe than all colleges are of at least reasonalbe standard) and there are most likely wonderful student accomondation in France as well (?).

Hopee that helped a bit...

Have a good day!

Fair enough . I won't argue you on that one. My friend couldn't take a shower without having little pieces of the roof falling down on her...

EDIT: She was staying in a student room in France.
