Why is it people delight in ranting about how Britain is an insignificant country..... Not that it is at all.

But it's only a tiny island (9th biggest in the world), with a tiny population (22nd out of 200 odd countries, 3rd most populated island)
Since when did The Young Turds, some online wannabe tv show that caters to college age libtards represent what Americans think?
Well, quite a lot of American boys think girls with british (posh or middle class basically) accents are hot.

Yes, it's still a big player - the overall global picture has changed a lot, but the UK has shown a (perhaps surprisingly, given the post-imperial trauma she went through) continued ability to keep up, at least in the sense of being a place many people all over the world look to with affection and respect. I think that came out very strongly during the Olympics, but there are countless other examples.

On the specific point of the Special Relationship, that is sometimes overplayed by both sides, but I watched CNN during the royal baby coverage and it was notable how many leading Americans referred to it, talking to their own US audiences - amongst them, Hilary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, various leading Senators, etc. It obviously still does exist as a real structure in US minds.

That's not to say that we should one-sidedly welcome everything the US does, nor is the UK above reproach in a number of important ways.
