THE BIG GUIDE TO CANTERBURY'S NIGHTLIFE (as of Jan '14)

I notice a trend each year in people asking what the nightlife is like at Kent and in Canterbury, and I'm sure many applicants to the Uni read the forum who aren't users who would also find this useful. So, I've taken it upon myself to update the previous thread on the nightlife in Canterbury - many thanks to Faustus Fotherby for creating that, especially as I'm mainly stealing his format :ashamed2:

This information may get out of date very quickly, what with venue changes and brand redesigns - the thread title will let you know when it was last updated and I will do my best to keep on top of it.

For your comfort and general ease, I've added the Facebook page link for each establishment (where applicable), next to its name. I am getting nothing out of this post, this is not a form of advertisment for any of the venues below. I've added them as I find this is the best way to get further information (e.g. specific events, which I have NOT linked to).

A

This is likely to require updating every now and again - a lot of rebranding takes place before the start of the academic year. The most reliable info. will be up from September. If you're reading this before then, some info. may be liable to change.

This is written from the perspective of someone who's just graduated from the University (and returning for further study) and studied at Canterbury. Therefore, I don't have any info. on Medway. If someone wants to add anything for Medway then give me a shout

Further to this, I have no idea what the CCCU SU provide!

This is by no means official and may not be endorsed by either the University, Kent Union or any of the establishments listed. I've tried to be largely factual and neutral but naturally I've had to state my opinion in places!

Arguably the most important - this is not a compilation of the only things to do in Canterbury. I fully appreciate that not everybody drinks alcohol. On the flipside, please bear in mind a large percentage of the student population are interested in drinking and therefore this is aimed at them.

If you have anything you'd like to add to this guide, either reply to this thread or PM me. :ta:

Pubs and Bars in the City

Campus

Well then, where better place to start than campus! It is host to The Venue - the Kent Union run nightclub around the corner from Essentials and will probably be your first clubbing destination as a Kent Fresher. Kent Union also run another bar on campus, called Woodys over in Parkwood. The deals, drinks (and food) available in these places may vary slightly from the other three bars on campus, which are run by the University itself. These are Mungo's (Eliot College), K Bar (Keynes College) and Origins (Darwin college) and each bar has it's own flagship night once a week too! You may hear from those in the years above you about The Attic and Rutherford Bar. These were both Union led and have since been converted for use other than drinking - for example, the Attic is becoming a 'Student Media Centre.' Anyway, I'll go through these places in detail below. Just for reference - Click on me for the Kent Union webpage and click on me for Kent Union Facebook page. Lastly, click on me for a rundown of what outlets the university run.

The Venue - Facebook Page
It would be rude not to start with the Venue! It is a nightclub that belongs to campus and is by the far and away the easiest place to go on a night out as a Kent fresher! It has three bars - a main bar downstairs adjacent to the averagely sized dancefloor, a downstairs shot bar and an upstairs main bar overlooking a balcony that itself looks over the dancefloor. There's also plenty of space for sitting and mingling upstairs, if you need to get away from the sweaty dancefloor  Be warned if you want to have deep conversation though, as it boasts a new sound system, which is pretty damn loud. If you're used to big cities, or your hometown has a good nightlife scene, then you'll likely find the Venue a bit boring or at least extremely average. You'll notice that some people will tire of it quickly and look to go to a variety of nights out in town (however, some people can't get enough and will be there every night they can!). I'll also warn you now, you may speak to friends who have gone to other unis and hear of their ridiculously low drink prices (shots for 50p?!), however in comparison to them, drinks will are still a fair amount. I will stress though, that taken on a national average, it's still cheap but don't go dreaming of shots for mere pence, like other SUs! :daydreaming: If you like clubbing/want to experience it when you leave home then I recommend you at least try it!

In the latter half of last year, the Venue was only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the occasional Friday for drum and bass fans. Saturday nights are run by Soap, who are an events organiser for nightclubs across Kent and now Essex (notably Maidstone and Dartford). They will host some crazy themes from silent discos, UV paint parties, 90s nights as well as ideas from Facebook followers (their Venue related page can be found here) as well as introducing some special drinks deals. Wednesday nights are now run by Jelli Baby, another events organiser specialising in working with student unions up and down the country. They also may have themes to their nights and will just run regular nights and they can be found on the Venue Facebook page. Friday nights have now been taken over by popular organiser - Student Republic and more of them is mentioned in the post about the city. They run a busy night called #Trend and predominantly play house and garage music, amongst the modern hits. They also offer transport from CCCU areas of the city, so don't expect it to be the same old Kent clientele either, which can make a nice change. Lastly, the Venue is occasionally opened on Monday or Thursday nights, where promoter Shut Up and Dance (SUAD) host events, pumping out R&B and hip-hop. Their page can be found here, but I can't claim to know a lot about these nights, sorry. Regardless of who is running it, there is a charge to get in after a certain time in the night (usually a few quid).

In truth, it doesn't matter who is running the night, it's still a club, it still sells the usual drinks and it still closes at 2am (except for special nights like, St. Patrick's Day where it doesn't close till 4 or even 6am!). It's not going to be everyones tastes - pumping out the latest chart music as well as throwbacks from the 90s. Essentially, the tracklisting wouldn't look out of place on a Now CD.. but some people love that, whatever. As I said earlier, it's worth giving it a go

Woodys - Facebook page
As you can probably tell by the name, Woodys is situated over in Parkwood. The previous thread described it pretty well - "it's a modern take on the 'hunting lodge' style image with lots of wooden beams and just generally wood everywhere - it comes with pool tables and some TVs that typically broadcast a music channel." In addition to that, it will also broadcast the football each week and on occasion landmark sporting occasions (superbowl, hyped up boxing matches, you get the jist). Woodys is usually frequented by those living in Parkwood as it's seen as a little way out for those living closer to all the other bars. I'll dispell the myth now and state that Parkwood really isn't a trek from main campus, it's accessible via a short woodland-esque path and the first thing you'll come across is Woodys. Except maybe on weekend nights, Woodys is a great place to grab a drink or two but it probably won't be where you stay your whole night - maybe a good place to start if planning a campus pub crawl! Also, Woodys serves a variety of hot food throughout the day and I'll be slaughtered if I don't mention the stack burger, full of burgers, bacon eggs, onion rings etc., which they state is 'only for winners.' :sly:

Mungo's - Facebook page
Mungo's is located in the maze that is Eliot college. If you have a successful night of drinking, your memory may be slightly hazy and be lost finding your way out of the building. It's a pretty modern looking bar, with a stylish finish to it. During the day, tables and chairs occupy the space which is turned into a dancefloor space on some evenings. It has TVs all around usually showing music channels and a side room with a pool table and an Xbox where you can play the latest FIFA, if it takes your fancy. During the day, the bar serves a range of hot food and again, it'll be rude not to mention their signature dish - the Mungo's mega-burger. Like the stack, it's pretty large (though in my opinion slightly less of a challenge  ). You can also get the usual range of alcohol, though the variety in draught drinks isn't too great (and this is the same across each of the university-run bars). Mungo's has a few special nights and as I mentioned earlier on, each of these bars has a 'flagship' night. In this case, that is "Magic Mungo's" on a Friday night, where they whack out the cheesy tunes and make use of that dancefloor space and it essentially becomes a mini-club. With the decline of successful Friday nights at the Venue, and the expense of Fridays in town, it's a great alternative destination. Other nights worth noting are the Monkeyshine Comedy Night on Thursdays and their pub quiz on Mondays. It should be noted that outside of Fresher's, Mungo's is shut at weekends.

Lastly, Mungo's will host "Massive Mungo's" once a term (as well as a bonus one in Fresher's). This is where the main bar spills out into the main Eliot Hall (you'll likely be shown in it during a campus tour, what with the view out over Canterbury etc.) and so you end up with a massive dancefloor in there with a couple of extra bars set up too. From my experiences they've been pretty packed - it's free entry, and the music is the same sort of Now CD type stuff, but hey.. it's free :p:

Origins - Facebook page
Origin's is another modern looking bar found within Darwin college. In truth it gives across more of a restaurant feel, especially during the day. The food served is loosely based around Tex Mex - there are a few themed meals, but the rest is typical of any other outlet. Like Mungo's, it has a bunch of TVs dotted all over the place and a couple of pool tables. Unlike Mungo's though, you'll be able to catch live sport here on their big TV - as they're open on weekends and have a Sky subscription. Origins has ample, comfortable seating at one area and some makeshift seating at the other - this is swept away to make room for a dance (well, mainly mingle) space for their evening events. Also, during Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes they have a live pianist, which is pretty cool. The flagship night for Origins is their infamous "Ruby Tuesdays" and easily packs out each time. As you can tell, these are on Tuesday nights and the music played is styled around an 'indie' theme - hence it's popularity. In truth, this theme ranges from indie to rock but one thing that's for sure is that you won't hear any cheesy pop! One thing I will point out though is that given the layout of the bar, busy nights are often cramped, which is probably my only drawback. In addition to this, Origins also host a pub quiz on Sunday evenings.

K Bar - Facebook page
K Bar is located in Keynes college and is probably the least good-looking bar (but don't let this put you off!) :colondollar: The lighting/red couches/dark walls/metal chairs lead to the effect of it looking a bit dark but I feel it's more than complimented by it's spacious garden area and it's the perfect place to grab a drink on a nice, sunny day. Out of all the bars, it's most definitely the drinkers bar and is best frequented in the evening. I say this because they don't serve food there, with the exception of pizzas. If you're urging for food whilst in Keynes though, Dolche Vita, a food outlet is located next door to the bar. Also next to K Bar, is like an extension of it with some comfortable seating perfect to sit if you turn up early to a lecture in Keynes or if you have some time to kill. Like the other bars, it is also host to many TVs and also has Sky. You'll get a lot of people in there on a Saturday watching the various game(s) - usually upon request, you'll find one game on the main screens and another on the smaller screens dotted around, making it the perfect place to keep up with the weekends sport. The flagship night for K Bar is "Don't Tell Your Momma" on a Thursday night. This is where a DJ (usually a student, if you fancy submitting an application to the bar) will belt out the tunes till late. They've also seemed to have adopted a neon theme for it, if that's up your street! Despite being a little while ago since I was a fresher, I remember Thursday's being a great night if you couldn't be bothered to leave campus. Drinks deals and plenty of dancing (the chairs are swept away for that dancefloor) as well as being able to chill outside was fantastic. Also at K Bar, you'll get the odd acoustic session every now again from a band on a Friday (again, if you think that could be you, talk to the bar!) and on Mondays, they do deals on their infamous cocktails - the perfect place for a 'pre-drink!'

Lastly, at the end of the year in the summer term, K Bar is also host to "Keynestock" - a festival type scenario where a host of student bands/artists play as well as plenty of drinks deals and weather permitting, a BBQ. Definitely a great weekend to chill out if you've finished your exams, or simply need to get away from the library! :yep:

The Gulbenkian - Facebook Page
To round off the campus outlets, I'll just briefly mention the Gulbenkian. It's the buliding that hosts the cinema and theatre - if you want be out somewhere on campus at night which doesn't involve drinking, then there's always the option of the cinema. It typically gets films later than an Odeon or Cineworld, but it's much more fairly priced. During the day, it's one of the best places to get a lunchtime snack and a coffee. There is a bar there, for evening films but this is usually used for those who are going to the theatre/cinema. It's not really a destination for your usual bar antics.

At the time of making this guide, I decided this post was getting quite long, so I've split it into different posts - it continues below, so keep on reading! This however concludes the summary of campus fun, so below this is what you can find in town. :yy:

Nightclubs in the City

So in this post, I'm going to give you the run down on the clubs in town, off-campus. Once the excitement of being on a campus/at uni begins to die down, you may find yourself wanting to go into town and sample the nightlife there. Plenty of others have the same idea so you won't be the only people down there! If you're a fresher and living on campus, you'll probably find the easiest way down is to grab a bus - they go to town till late on most days and much easier than walking, especially if you don't know your way. However, I'd get a one-way, rather than return as the buses back to campus stop at about half 11. At the end of the night, if you decide not to grab a taxi back from town and walk it, it's not uncommon, but don't forget about campus being built on a whacking great hill. :p: There are loads of taxi firms out there, but I'm not going to name any as it would be unfair on those I don't name. You'll soon find out which cab companies to go for. :yy:

Club Chemistry - Facebook Page
This nightclub is probably the biggest in Canterbury, size-wise and can be found next to Canterbury East station, just outside the city wall. It's gone by many a name over the past few years, so don't be surprised to hear it referred to as The Works or Baa Baas. Due to it's location, you can be forgiven for associating it mostly with Canterbury Christchurch Uni (abbreviated to CCCU) as their marketing for next year seems to be really aimed at them - I'll get on to this later. However, that doesn't mean you won't see Kent students (UKC) in there and sometimes plenty of them! In fact, unless you're in a sports team, the rivalry between UKC and CCCU is mostly friendly banter and hey, mixing into their nights may mean meeting a bunch of new people and taking advantage of cheap deals etc. I'm totally unaware if they're going through any revamp this summer but if not then I can tell you that Club Chem has three floors and each has their own quirk in what music will be played. The bottom floor has a mix of an average sized dancefloor, some outskirt seating and a large bar playing mainly cheese and pop. At first you might think this is a dreadful idea but as you get later into the night, you'll probably find yourself dancing like crazy down there. I don't really know how to describe it but it has a 'modern, wooden' feel, if that at all makes sense? The second floor has a large dance area, practically no seating, a smaller bar and has just a generally modern feel. The tunes that this floor pumps out are mainly RnB and hip-hop. Lastly, the third floor also has a large dance area, average sized bar and again, some outskirt seating. For this bar, it has a more metallic finish to it and will play more electronic/dance/techno music (as well as current tunes) and is probably the most popular floor. Depending on the night you go, only one or two floors may be open but typically for 'student nights,' all floors will be open. Also, beware that Saturday nights aren't 'student' nights and so the drink deals you usually find don't apply and can be quite pricey. :frown:

So, speaking of student nights at Club Chem - as I said earlier it seems that these nights are aimed mainly at CCCU - though don't let this put you off. I say this because they are using a brand new club promoter, known as Cloud9. These guys are partnered with CCCU SU but aim their nights at all students. Towards the end of last year, Chemistry saw a decline in customers for whatever reason and I can imagine that this new brand will be an attempt to galvanise students into visiting again. It appears that they're student nights at Club Chem are Wednesdays and this night is called 'Tease!' and like the Venue will always have some sort of theme, which may or may not tickle your fancy  On Fridays is the 'Friday Night Project' (or FNP) and this is run by Cloud9. A quick January update would suggest that FNP on Friday's is immensely popular and one of the few decent places to go on a Friday in Canterbury.. Now I don't know much about these yet as they're still new to me and I haven't had a chance to get down there. What I do know is that on the student nights they'll have some outrageously good drinks deals - way better pricing than campus.

Chill - Facebook Page
Chill is located down by the Odeon in town, close to the bus station. Unlike Chemistry, Chill doesn't try and attract students from a particular uni and also unlike Club Chem, it's a lot smaller! It consists of two floors - downstairs you'll find a bar and dancefloor (fairly small) as well as limited seating. Then upstairs is where they put their seating, alongside a similarly sized bar. The upstairs seating tends to be bookings only - which you can sort by contacting them or whatever. If you don't have a booking, this restricts where you'll be for the most of night and you'll likely find yourself downstairs. Both floors are styled the same and it looks pretty stylish - a modern interior with all that'd you expect from a club. The only downside is that upstairs is carpeted and after a while, the place can end up reeking. Just like Chem though, the prices on a Friday and Saturday are a lot higher than on their designated student nights and as such it's usually pretty dead. Having said that, Chill seems to be the locals choice of club - whether that's a good thing or not, I'll leave to your judgement. As for the music, it's pretty average for a club, really and you'll get the usual mix of songs from current chat toppers, to the occasional throwback. Amongst the student community, Chill gets mixed reviews - some will say they hate it but others claim there's no other place to be - a lot of people will never have been!

As I say, they also have nights for students, or at least student friendly prices  First up is Alphabeats, Chill's own night on a Wednesday. The idea is that each Wednesday is assigned a letter, such as D - the theme will then be something (loosely) D related and may be, I don't know.. dinosaurs? :dontknow: Then they encourage people to turn up following the theme. Some follow it, some don't, as I say it's pretty loose. What is cool though is that if your first or last name begins with D, you'll get in for free! (Disclaimer: It was for the previous academic year and can only assume they're following that on!). Also, like Cloud9, they let an events brand take over on a Monday night, known as Fuzzy Logic (Facebook link). Again they do themes, and again it's pretty loosely based. The most impressive thing about Monday nights at Chill are their drink deals, which can be ridiculous - I remember when they did 3 drinks for the price of 1 (I think I remember?) for a time - not sure if that's continuing. If not, then don't be surprised to see drinks at £1.50 each before xpm as well. Lastly, every couple weeks or so, Chill run a night on Tuesdays known as 'Glitterbomb.' It's an LGBT night also at student friendly prices with typical club entry. I've heard it's supposed to be popular enough. It used to be once a month, but obviously due to popular demand they've scheduled more! Sorry there's not a lot to say about Chill in comparison to Chem, I just don't know as much about it.

The Cuban - Facebook Page
Right then, I'll need to point out straightaway that this isn't a strictly a club - but I feel their Monday nights are worthy of a place in this post about the bigger places in town. During the day and most other nights of the week, it's a pretty classy (but expensive) restaurant/bar - some nights I remember some salsa dancing. However, scrap all that for Monday nights, which are their student nights, where I've seen some crazy queues to get in. Once again, an events brand is responsible for this, they are named Student Republic (they also have lots of other pages relating to their various venues, which can be found from that link) and are arguably the biggest events brand in Canterbury - they were also in control of lots of nights at Chem last year. Somehow, they've made what is essentially a pretty average night at a bar into one of the most attended nights of the week, so fair play on that. Yes, there are drink deals but these deals are in comparison to the usual prices they have at The Cuban (though you can't really complain). I suppose the big pull factor is that they brand it as a classy affair, no riff-raff , everyone to be looking good (for reference, trainers are usually ok, so long as they're not proper sporty ones). The music is also under the theme of 'pretty classy,' - you'll get current chart toppers, but not the rubbish Now CD-esque ones. You'll probably also get more off the track stuff, or maybe remixes of songs but certainly no cheese. Get there early for cheaper entry and (as is often the case with nights in Canterbury) get yourself on the guest list on Facebook, for 'queue jump,' not that this always works in practise.

Anyway, as for the Cuban itself, you can tell the building is on Canterbury high street as it's pretty awkward. There are two floors - the bottom is host to a short and long bar, the shorter bar on a slightly raised area. The shallower area is nearly all dancefloor. Upstairs is another longer dancefloor, with a short bar and some seating. Downstairs seating is reserved for VIP tables. A big draw, certainly when it's dry are the outdoor terraces - a large one which will nearly always be crowded and has it's own little outdoor bar. The other side sees another terrace but it mainly used as a smoking area. As I say, it's a not a club but the Mondays are quite hectic so worthy of a place.

The Ballroom - Facebook Page
If I mentioned Monday nights at The Cuban without mentioning Bombo at The Ballroom, people may get angry with me. Another link. Bombo runs on random Monday nights throughout the year - i.e. it's not running every Monday night. Now, I've not actually been so I'm sorry for not being able to give a lot of info., but I do know that this also goes for the classy affair theme - dress codes and good-looking people, as well as some cocktails/expensive drinks flying about. That doesn't mean that all drinks are totally expensive but don't be surprised to see people flashing the cash getting a bottle of bubbly, maybe. The music styles itself very similar to The Cuban, RnB, hip-hop, decent chart music and no cheese. As for the decor and interior of the place, check out their FB page which has a few photos.

I think that can do for rounding up nightclubs (plus a few more to pad out this post) in the city itself. The post below has some bits and bobs about the pubs and bars in Canterbury.

Pubs and Bars in the City

In this post, I'll be giving some information on the numerous pubs and bars in the town. With regards to pubs, there's literally dozens.

If you're a fellow student who thinks I've made a glaring omission, give me a shout.

If you own an establishment and I've missed you out, sorry. :colondollar: If I've given you less text/info. that another establishment, again I'm sorry! I've not been to every pub listed and can't give a run down on it, whereas more detailed descriptions are of those I have been too. :shy2:

I haven't given Facebook links, unless I feel they add to my description. I don't have the willingness to go through and find all the links for everywhere listed here. In most cases, a search yourself will help find them.

Wetherspoons
There are two Wetherspoons pubs in Canterbury, one can be found down by the Westgate towers and at the very bottom of the hill that UKC is located on. It's handily called The West Gate Inn. The other is called the The Thomas Ingoldsby and is found at the other end of the high street to Westgate, down by Burgate (often called Northgate), by the cathedral. Both 'spoons are typical 'spoons outlets. If you're from anywhere larger than a small town then you'll know what one is like and the sort of prices they sell drinks for. Also, as per 'spoons, there's the usual selection of local ales. As with most of the chain up and down the country, they go for the wooden decor, trying and make it all homely. This is certainly the case down in the Westgate branch, which is a lot smaller than its Burgate equivalent and it certainly gets pretty cramped with people pre-drinking before a big night in town. It's also worth noting that the West Gate Inn is traditionally frequented by UKC students, whilst The Thomas Ingoldsby is more for CCCU. Naturally, you get locals in both pubs, but the sacrifice to students is more noticable at the Westgate one, making it much more preferable 'spoons. If you're looking for a seat on a busy night though, the Burgate one is your best bet.

The Penny Theatre
This pub is in the proper Northgate area of town and can be easily found by finding Sainsbury's, right on the outskirts of the city centre. Due to its location, it's most likely populated by students living in the Hales Place/Sturry Road area of the city (both UKC/CCCU). It's certainly a lot bigger than you might imagine and is host to a variety of nights. It's part of the Scream chain of pubs and during the day, it offers a wide variety of cheap food and the drink prices are pretty competitive too. I like the Penny Theatre because it styles itself on being student-centric, their Facebook page is also pretty good to follow and doesn't just regurgitate the same old stuff (maybe this guide will even get a mention there? ). What it is best known for is Quid's Night, on a Thursday. This does what it says on the tin, pay a quid entry (entry fee for a pub, I hear you shout?!), but once you get in you can get pints/spirit mixers etc. for only a pound. Typically though, if you want something that tastes half-decent, then you'll need to fork out £1.50 (corr..). Quid's night is pretty good though and if it's a nice day, the outside area is great place to hang out. Be prepared to queue for Quid's though, as it's become increasingly popular! They also do other nights, sometimes hosting bands and pub quizzes and all that malarkey. All in all, worth checking out.

The Cherry Tree
First things first, it's tiny. It's located off of one of the side streets from the high street. It consists of a small bar and a couple of outdoor benches. It has more of a 'indie' style vibe, whatever that really means. Essentially, don't be surprised to see the barman being pretty casual/have great beards. On days other than Monday and Thursday, it usually consists of locals/the odd group of students/a band playing and isn't anything particularly special (and can be expensive). However, on Mondays and Thursdays, it lowers it prices, crams in the students for a quick pre-drink. One attraction to this place is because of Pig****ers, a cocktail primarily based on vodka. The recipe is top secret but one is usually enough to make you merry (not drunk, mind). It's £3, but in my opinion well worth it. If you're not feeling it, a lot of basic shots are only a quid. Lastly worth a mention is the fact they sell the special reserve version of local cider Biddenden's - at 13% strength, doesn't taste great though. Worth popping into to see what the fuss is all about, for sure - you'll probably also come across people who say it's 'starting to be overrun by students,' 'this place used to be cool,' and all that other stuff but in truth it's always been quite popular.

The Lady Luck
Found close to the kebab houses of the Westgate end of the high street, it's very much an 'alternative,' bar yet is all welcoming. They themselves say their jukebox has rock 'n' roll, punk and metal. It's pretty cheap in there for the most part and has a nice little garden area. Every now and then, they'll have some different bands or DJs playing. A good base of drinking for a lot of 'alternative' societies - but I don't want to categorize the place. The bog draw to the Lady Luck is the fact it's open till 1am weekdays and till 2am on a Friday and Saturday - much later than other pubs in the city. I've heard the cathedral play a big role in the city council and so obtaining a late license for a bar appears to be tricky.

Alberry's
This is situated a little way down off one of the side streets from the high street - near the Superdry shop. It styles itself as a pretty cool little wine and cocktail bar - as well as having a wide range of spirits. Usually fairly expensive but from what I gather, they've been set up for a while. I felt it's worth writing a description as on Tuesday nights, they host a night called Halfway where they have cheap drinks and play a range of drum and bass, dubstep and house, for any fans out there. From what I hear, those into these genres of music find it's a pretty cool place to go on a Tuesday. :yy:

The Old Brewery Tavern
Admittedly, my memory of this place is a little hazy :o: At any rate, I can tell you it's located just off the side street where the Abode hotel is. They installed a dancefloor a few years back, which seemed quite baffling but it's worked out well for them. All I know is that they have a wide range of drinks and are great promoters of local ales. As for events, I'm aware they host a DJ a few times a week. Occasionally they'll host a proper event where they encourage students along and drop the prices. It always seems to be quite popular and is a choice for many to pre-drink. I also like their courtyard and I'm also pretty sure these guys have a late licence till 2am everyday except Wednesday. Handy to know! Infamous events organisers, Student Republic also have a night here on Thursdays, known as Jäger Rocks. Every Thursday night, you'll find £1 jägerbombs and £2 vodka mixers. There is an entry fee for the night, but with such cheap drinks, it doesn't really matter! Definitiely a good Thursday night out. :yy:

CT2 Bar & Terrace
Not too sure how we stumbled across this, but thought it was a cool (but little) place, so I'm giving it a description. Again, they're fairly new but credit to them as they made me want to go back, the service was fantastic - even if the bar is the size of a stamp. It's a little way up St. Dunstan's street, opposite the Sainsbury's Local, so worth popping into if you're coming from Uni and going into town. They always have some sort of deal on and their shots are well priced.

The Monument
Also on St. Dunstan's, but is a way up by the mini-roundabout, so once again it's good if walking down from the Uni. Definitely student friendly and it's a pretty casual affair in there. They label themselves as the sports pub, and to their credit, they have some pretty big screens in there. As such, if you're part of a sports team, you'll probably find yourself in there during a pub crawl - the pub affiliates itself with many of the sports teams. I also hear they host poker nights once a week, which anyone is free to enter.

The Jolly Sailor
Found a little closer to the high street, on the same street as The Penny Theatre and again is very student-centric. Pretty cool vibe in there, and fairly priced. They also show a lot of sport. The only drawback is that it seems to be affiliated with many CCCU sports teams, so probably get a majority of CCCU students in there. Again, it's not a problem but some people like to be surrounded by fellow UKC students ( ). When it's busy, it does get a little cramped.

The Cricketers
Also located on the high street, opposite Nando's. It was expensive in there but I understand they're under new management, so I'm not sure if that's changed? Regardless, it's easily defined as a traditional English pub with a log fire, local ales and proper pub food. Very much a locals pub, but if you want a civilised chat over your beer/local ale, then it's not bad.

Now as I said at the start to this post, there's simply too many pubs/bars in Canterbury for me to describe, so I've listed many establishments below, alongside their approximate location. The reason they're description-less is mainly because I've not been to them or I can't provide enough of a description! They're listed in no particular order and just because they lack descriptions doesn't mean they're rubbish! Lastly, it's very likely I've missed numerous places altogether. :colondollar:

Other Pubs and Bars:
The Loft - Opposite Alberry's, a little way down off the high street, on the side street with Superdry.
The Dolphin - A little way out of the centre, down the side street, found sort of opposite the Jolly Sailor.
The Parrot - Down the same road as The Dolphin
The Black Griffin - On the high street, near the Lady Luck.
The Canterbury Tales - On the street between the high street and the Marlowe Theatre.
The Carpenter's Arms - A little walk around the high street, by the Westgate Towers.
The Beercart Arms - Further down the same street as the Old Brewery Tavern.
The Three Tuns - At the end of the street where Alberry's and The Loft are located.
Bramley's - Found on Orange Street, round the back of Debenhams off of the high street. On the same long road connected to the Canterbury Tales.
The Seven Stars - Also found on Orange Street.
La Trappiste - Found at the Debenhams end of Orange Street.
The Old Buttermarket - Found outside the famous Cathedral gate, in the square there.
The Bishop's Finger - Found by the Westgate Towers, next to the kebab house there. Next to the Falstaff Hotel on St. Dunstan's.
The Unicorn Inn - Found off of St. Dunstan's, up by the level crossing.

Ok, so that's the rundown on nightlife - well, clubs, pubs and bars in Canterbury and up on campus. I hope everyone that's read this has found it helpful!

What is it like for house parties? Do they happen regularly or just now and then?

As you can imagine they're pretty random in nature but due to the way Parkwood is set up, you're more likely to find some there. They happen often enough though but don't expect to Waltz into them. Huge spontaneous parties are pretty rare though.
Once freshers is over, I'll be updating the main posts with some correct info. - it seems there's some changing around this year

It appears that they're student nights at Club Chem are Wednesdays ('Varsity Wednesdays'), aimed at bringing in those in sports clubs and on Fridays ('Friday Night Project'). Now I don't know much about these yet and as I say, they're brand new nights. I can only imagine they'll have some outrageously good drinks deals though - way better pricing than campus.

Just a little correction so everyone knows... Wednesday in Canterbury is extremely busy and AlphaBEATs at Chill is actually run by SOAP who do a night at The Venue on Saturday's! They also used to do SOAP and Girls And boYs at Studio 41 before it closed down. Chill also does a LGBT night every other Tuesday called Glitterbomb which is also run by SOAP/AlphaBEATs, if you've joined Christ Church or Kent University this year you should definitely check these nights out

I had no idea Alphabeats was run by Soap! Also, I didn't know about Glitterbomb too! When I edit this whole guide (for example, the Venue needs a lot of updating!!) I'll be sure to add these in  Thank you
I've been totally rubbish with my promises to update this. However, with term 1 (and therefore essays) all done I will do something about this over Christmas.. so much has changed/been added to nights out here!

Edit: The campus bit has been updated (Jan '14). Only minor changes/additions were made to the Venue/K-Bar section. The website is being a bit screwy at the minute and I thought I lost the whole thread. I'll update the posts about places in the city when the site is fixed.

Made a couple of updates there to the Venue, Club Chemistry, Chill and The Old Brewery Tavern :yy:

It used to get a couple of nights a week dotted around but seems to have slipped off the scene. Struggling to think of anywhere off the top of my head that has any dubstep-type nights tbh :/

Essentially for the reason the chap above has posted. My understanding is that the Cathedral exercises a lot of influence over the City Council (understandably, it brings in an awful lot of tourism) and one particular problem the Cathedral associates with Canterbury is drunken students up and down the high street. In truth, there's barely problem at all. Occasionally you'll find places will open later till 3 or 4am (rarely 6) but this will usually be for a special night rather than anything regular.

In a couple of weeks, I'm going to have a load of free time. I will do my best to update all the information in the opening posts. If there's demand for it then I can also look into creating another freshers week guide for everyone but it will be very similar to last years one
Both Picture House and CT2 are closed down now - just to update you!

Yeah, the Picture House shut down not long after I made my last update I think :frown: Thanks for the heads up about CT2, shame that. I don't it's location did it any favours though.
