The ESRC has nothing listed on their most recent update (July 2013). And what you have just described does not sound like an actual requirement. I very much hope that this isn't the case - I've never read that anywhere until your post. There are also many people with a standard taught Master's who have PhD funding from ESRC so how did they manage it?


It may be a more recent thing - it wasn't the case when I started (pre-DTC) when it was essentially required, and if you only had a non qualifying MA you had to do the 1+3. I think they've introduced better training in the PhD portion since and are thus more relaxed. Contact the DTC you want to apply to if you are at all worried.

Anyway, I just want to reiterate that the reason I made the post was in response to the question 'why would anyone do one?' The answer when I took mine was 'because the ESRC made me'.
