I now want my insurance choice as my 1ST.. change of circumstance

I didn't realize when replying to my offers that you only get offered a place at your insurance IF you do NOT make the grades for your 1st one. The problem is my insurance choice asking for the same grades as my 1st choice.
I have become quite ill since applying to uni and whilst I'm still well enough to attend uni, I will not be able to recieve treatment in the area where my 1st choice is (manchester). The doctors are advising me not to move so far away and since my insurance choice is fairly near anyway, it now seems my insurance choice is the one I must go to.
- but will they let me in? Surely if I've made my 1st choice offer, I won't be able to decline that and choose my insurance choice of uni? I can get a doctor's note and like I say it was only after I had selected my UCAS offers that I began treatment for my illness.
What do I do? If I get into my 1st choice, but not my insurance choice I won't be able to go :frown: If I don't get into my 1st choice, I won't get into my insurance choice either.
Can I contact the insurance choice uni before results day and ask if they'd make an exception? it's a matter of health not just preference. and can I still decline my 1st choice placement even if I get the grades to meet the offer? cos im not going to be able to go to my 1st choice either way because of the specialist medical treatment I need. please help, im panicking! I wish to god I had selected my insurance choice as my firm choice now.. but I couldn't have known this would happen!

No, you're right - if you make the grades (or don't but your firm lets you in) you won't be able to decline the firm and choose the insurance instead.

I think the best option is to contact your universities tomorrow, explain the situation and why you would now like your current insurance to become your firm, and then you may either be able to arrange for your current firm to become unsuccessful leaving just your insurance, or swap them around so your current insurance will become your firm.
You need to contact both your firm and insurance choices to arrange this.

However you've left this very late. Both your unis will now have A level results and will be hard at work going through every application.

I'd recommend calling your insurance uni first thing tomorrow and explaining the situation and asking if they can help - they may be able to handle communicating with your firm uni directly and so minimise the number of hoops you have to jump through.

However they may well refuse to speak to you about your application (a lot of unis do to prevent any chance that they are accused of breaking the rules on how they handle the A level results). If this is the case then you'll need to collect your results and call them ASAP on results day.

In all cases though speak to your insurance FIRST to let them know you want to go there - you need to be sure they're holding a space for you before arranging to get out of your commitment to your firm choice.

re PQ: I contacted the universities and they told me I needed to withdraw my offer from my first altogether to make this possible. I rang up the doctor's and told them this and they reluctantly agreed that they would transfer my care to the health services up north and I would continue to recieve treatment up there. So the problem got solved.. I made the offer for my 1st choice and I am now so happy I am able to go there, and so glad I didn't change anything  thanyou for your help xxx

TheSownRose: thankyou for your help! In the end I had a furthur discussion with the doctors and we worked out a way to continue my treatment whilst still moving away to my 1st choice. That is where I really wanted to go, and I'm glad I didn't withdraw from it. I made my offer and I couldn't be happier. It all worked out thank god x
