Cant find anything in Brighton - worried

Im starting uni in Brighton this september but having difficulties with finding a room for rent... i currently live in Lincolnshire so I cant just casually go there and look at a room.
I contacted few people from gumtree etc but one of them wanted me to pay in £700 deposit + £400 for month rent (so thats £1000 to move in... NOT going to happen)
the other one said that "im too young" (im 21) so he didnt consider me, other rooms are just too far and i would end up spenng too much for travel, some of them say Female only, some of them are just totally overpriced and some of them want someone immidiately and cant wait until september... this is very frustrating!
any ideas?
Im thinking of booking a hostel in Brighton in early sept for 3 days, and just walk, look for rooms, visit them, phone people up while in brighton and maybe that way i will find something? is that a good idea?
