Durham Accomodation
Welcome to the University of Durham forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from the differences between colleges to the nightlife, an abundance of Rahs to the Stockton campus.

Yeah, that room is almost identical to mine (except mine was Floor 4). They were nice rooms (compared with student accommodation elsewhere in the country), although the clothes hangers were a bit crap. Also, the mirror by the sink was too low down! Maybe I'm just tall, but it was a hassle.(Original post by iiikewldude)
here are some pics of the room i stayed in in collingwood during the open day. -
I heard that Klute was now the worst club in Europe because the winner (apparently in Holland/ Belgium) closed down. However that may be a vicious rumour. But DH-1 isn't as bad as it used to be after they re-furbished it - the only prob is that North Road can get a bit sticky late at night, but there are generally lots of high-vis policemen/ vans etc (really enticing people to come to Durham now!)(Original post by AndyTucker)
Klute (voted 2nd worst nightclub in Europe by FHM), and DH-1, which is also appalling.
The nights at the SU are ok, but the student bar there is quite expensive for a student bar - the college bars a lot cheaper. Also the main room in the SU stinks on a Saturday morning (if you go there for any sport/ club sesisons/ meetings) after the Friday night dance event. And the architecture is dire - possibly the architect was having a block after designing Sydney OH.(Original post by AndyTucker)
They're so bad they're good though if you get what I mean. There's some great nights to be had at the student union though (which incidentally was built by the same guy as the sydney opera house, but I think Durham got the raw end of the deal)
Walkabout has possibly taken over as the place to which everyone goes - cheap, lots of screens, and well placed for those living out in the 2nd/3rd years etc who can't be bothered to go to their colleges.(Original post by AndyTucker)
There's the usual Weatherspoons/Walkabout/Varsity pubs, and plenty of mega-cheap student bars.
Just make sure you don't miss the last train home. There's one at about 11:15 so you have to leave pubs bang on 11 or a little bit before - after that there's one at 2:30 I think it is. Taxi back to Durham will set you back about £20.(Original post by AndyTucker)
If you get fed up of Durham's nightlife though, Newcastle is only 10 mins (and £3 ish) away on the train, and the trains run all through the night...
Possibly one of Durham's best points!(Original post by AndyTucker)
The great thing about Durham's size is that everywhere is within walking distance of everywhere else. All of the accomodation is no more than about 15-20 mins walk from anywhere else in the university. Fantastic!
Yes, I do find Durham gets a bit too small sometimes. My home town is only about 80,000 so its not exactly huge but Durham can feel quite small. The good thing is that the holidays usually come along just at the right time for me, so it never gets to the point where I can't stand being in Durham. Also, as mentioned above, Newcastle is only a few mins away, so if you want to get out of Durham and into the city you can. I even went down to London for the day last term - it's about 5 hour round trip.[(Original post by Serendipity)
Do you ever find it gets a bit claustrophobic?
I don't go that often, even though I keep meaning to! I know it sounds a bit sad but Durham seems (somehow!) to keep me entertained.(Original post by Serendipity)
How often (realistically) do you actually go to Newcastle? I know it's quite close, I really like my nightlife!
College rivalry is a bit over-hyped. There's a lot of ribbing etc in Freshers' Week and the week after, but then on the whole it disappears. Of course there's rivalry on the pitch but in the good sense.(Original post by Serendipity)
Does the college rivalry ever get a bit tedious/malicious? -
Hahaha. Nice way of putting it.(Original post by iiikewldude)
It's kind of ironic how having the worst club is europe is so much more desirable than having say, the 23rd worst club in europe.
Gosh, I'm really looking forward to starting Uni at Durham. Lolz.. I can't wait.. I really can't!
*bursting with happiness*

Noo! I won't get the chance to until term actually starts! I've only been to the UK once in my life.. and that was for 4 days? for my Cambridge interview. So I've also seen glimpses of London and Downing College at Cam.(Original post by iiikewldude)
it's a nice place, have u visited it yet?
Now I'm just so pleased getting into Durham. Wheee!! -
Yeh! International Students have this Induction day starting on the 30th of September.(Original post by Thom18)
And so you should be! It will be great - I'm really looking forward to it. 6th October can't come quick enough...
After the open day feedback, I'm so glad that Durham is my only choice. I think I'm going to love the place so much. Hey, we'll be in the same department lolz..
