NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) 2014

Hey

Not sure if there's already a thread for the scientist training programme for 2014 yet, if there is could someone link me to it please!

Does anyone know when the vacancies usually come out? Couldn't find anything on the website

This year the application process started in January, but keep an eye on the NHS careers website as they said from December. They advertise in New Scientist too if you subscribe to that.

I'll be looking to apply for the STP scheme. Looks like a great way to gain a Masters, whilst getting trained for a career that will hopefully provide a reassuring sense of job security

Yup! If you don't mind me asking what have you graduated in? Also, do you have any experience?

I'm finding it so difficult to find a placement for work experience. I've been worried that this will limit my chances of getting on to the STP scheme. I read in some threads from people who got in, that they had ALOT of experience or were already working for the NHS :s-smilie:

I'm in my final year of Biomed, and no I don't have any hospital experience or placement work under my belt at all :frown: It does seem soo competitive though, I mean just looking at how few spaces there were available this year is depressing in itself! Do you have any idea what specialities you want to apply for?

Same, I'm leaning towards Cardiac Science (critical care sub-speciality) and haematology or immunology. Getting some experience in a lab over Christmas would help me loads though.

Good luck by the way!

Oh cool, but I thought Biomeds can't apply for Cardiac science....and can only apply for Life sciences? :s-smilie:

Yeah exactly, I'm going to have another attempt to find voluntary work in a lab too hopefully after I get some coursework out the way..

Thank you! Good luck to you too

Nope, from what I gathered from a talk we were given the other day, all options are open to us. I'll have to check though.
Hi

Could anyone who has applied for the STP before post some tips and advice. Also, anyone who is currently doing the STP could you give us some insight on what its like.

I' ve been checking the NHS STP website and they have made loads of updates. It all getting me nervous?

Last year they only had to do numerical and logical reasoning (Shapes, sequences etc) do you think it will be the same again? Hopefully it will!

Thanks x

Hi all,

I'm new here! I really don't want to get my hopes up as a new graduate considering last year there were over 8000 applicants for about 220 places but I'm so excited for the applications to open!

What themes/specialisms are people thinking of applying to? Is anyone going to any of the open days? I'm going to the Leeds one for clinical engineering and medical physics.

Also, are there any previous candidates/people currently employed STP out there? Any tips or advice?

I've heard a lot of people complain about not being able to afford travelling to the other end of the country for the MSc component of the programme, but surely if you are on c £25,000 you should be able to afford travel here and there? Any thoughts?

25K is fair amount especially if you have just graduated.

The STP is very competitive I have heard people apply 2 to 3 times before they get onto the training programme. Im thinking of the Life Sciences route as I have a bio/chem degree. Have you seen the posts this year there seem to be a lot of Medical Physics in London.

I applied last year and am applying again this year for Sleep and respiratory physiology. Was excited to apply but really gutted about the locations as there are none I particularly like :frown: really wanted to stay around Newcastle. *sigh*
Good luck everyone on their applications. They Open at 9:00 am today! Fingers crossed :crossedf:

Good luck guys! They have cut down the word limit by 50 words for the questions this year . Making it harder still!

Hi, I am applying for sleep and respiratory physiology aswell. Out of interest what degree/experience do you have? Be interesting to know what history people have.

Cheers,

Hey,
I have a degree in physiological sciences and I'm currently doing a masters in neuroscience. I don't have any clinical experience but will be doing a research project in sleep science so will hopefully get some then. How about you?
I applied last year and got on the reserve list for interview but no luck in getting one unfortunately.

Very unluckly for last year, hopefully you can make it through this time.

I am currently in my 3rd year of sport and exercise science degree. I have experience completing respiratory and lung function tests, and have experience working on dementia research studies and will be completing some work experience in a vascular lab of my local hospital which will be second choice. I think I may be a bit of an outside chance in getting through due to degree etc but got to try. Would love to get into it though, sounds like such a good job/oppourtunity.

Wow yea you're lucky you get training in that stuff. I considered doing exercise physiology for my masters. Do you know if there is any way you can get training for lung function tests? I did some in practicals but nothing officially recognised. I really want to get on this year as it's the only way I have found to get into sleep science. Good luck with your application sounds like you have quite a good chance.
Hi all!

Was wondering if anyone was looking to apply for Histopathology? Just interested in what experience people have. I have a Biomedical Science degree which contained Histopathology modules and I have worked in an NHS Histopathology lab for over a year now. Unsure if this is going to be enough :/ I really enjoy working in this area though.

Thanks and good luck!!!
