Going to a private school from a state school?

I'm having trouble with whether I would like to go to a private school after only attending state schools for pretty much my entire education.

I personally think it would be a great change in terms of an extra push and support in studying but is there anything else that might weigh down this option of going to a private school? I know a few of my friends who go and absolutely hate it. Others who have no experience but know of people who attend private schools says they are 'stuck up' and 'self righteous'.

Would I would like to know is if you have moved from a state school to a private school, What was your experience like? Was it a good decision? Are the people there how they're stereotyped to be?

Any experience with private schools would be really helpful too.

Thank you! :smile:

I went from a state school to a boarding school - and I love it! Lots of extra focus on sport and academics but also socialising :smile:

Sounds good :smile: I suppose I'm leaning towards going to a private school as it's a good opportunity.
I went from a state primary to private secondary school when I was ten, but I think that's a bit early for it to matter - I'd never even heard of private schools before that age, so I had no preconceptions.

What gender are you? Mine was an all girls' school, and one of the cheapest in the country, so if you're going to a boys' public school I won't bother giving you advice. :tongue:

However, if not;

I have plenty of experience with comprehensives too, because my Mum was a teacher. In my experience, the main differences are;
- Everyone is pushed more, and entrance is paid for and on academic merit, so there is no 'lower tier' of kids who just aren't interested. The flip side is people getting Bs genuinely believe they aren't intelligent.
- People at private schools can be naive about life and money. It's often not intentional. Personally I've never met any outright snobs, but I've heard that at other schools they can be endemic.
- There isn't a massive gap between lower end private schools and upper end state schools - the main difference is point 1.
- Life is just gentler. It's hard to describe, but I think private school students take longer to grow up, myself included. I was really immature when I started university.

On the whole, I say go for it - the academic support beats any other considerations by a mile. :smile:
I went from a private school to a state school, one of the best decisions ever. BUT I suppose it depends on how good your current school is and how good the proposed one is and what else it can offer when compared to your current school...
I go to a private school. Some people are really stuck up, all "oh I've got a mansion in Greece and daddy has a Ferrari" but most are nice :smile: everyone generally gets on well and the actual education is great :smile:

Ah, yeah, I think I'd be a different person. Definitely. I wouldn't mind staying at my state school tbh. It is great and is a very progressive school.

Haha, one of my friends said her best friend came back from a private school and suddenly she became really competitive :rolleyes:
But yeah, I think you'd attract different people when making new friends anyway. I'm sure there'll be nice people.
