Could I pursue a career in journalism with a degree in Education from Cambridge?

I would like to take a degree in Education (in English/Drama) at Cambridge (or 2nd choice: Durham), in order to pursue a career in teaching later in life. However, before teaching, I would love to be involved in journalism - specifically, sports journalism. Would an employer from a journalism firm/newspaper firm value an Education degree - in particular, from Cambridge?
Journalism is a career based on writing/reporting talent, not degrees. A strong degree from a strong University sets you up well, but a journalist is employed on the basis of their writing, not their degree. So it's not likely to harm a journalistic career, but it won't help a jot if you can't write well.
