The Student Room Group

A string of bad uni decisions.. In need of some advice!

Me being me thought it would be a really exciting experience for a girl from Birmingham to go to uni in London without considering other factors..
I ended up choosing one of the smaller, more specialised unis thinking it will give me a higher chance of getting a job at the end of the degree, only downside is there is no accommodation.

I found a great student accommodation, but the rent is too expensive which means I would have to find a room mate, this isn't possible because I've yet to make friends in London and everyone will have probably sorted their accommodation by the time uni starts. Now I have to pay double for the room until I find someone.

On top of all this I'm worried senseless about freshers week because I have no idea of how to get back at the end of each night, in Birmingham a group of us get taxis back after clubbing and the boys are always the last in the taxis, I'm guessing that's not what happens in London? It's not like living in halls where everyone goes back to the same place and me making my way back by myself isn't exactly safe.. ): not really feeling the excitement anymore tbh.. Would be forever grateful for some advice.

Worth a try starting a thread for accommodation for your uni's students. If not there many others I'm sure still trying to find accommodation from other unis in London.

I suppose you could read up on london, contact your accommodation provider for advice on food, transport, whatever they are worth ago if they live in the city.

Taxis are expensive but the black cabbies will offer you good directions to wherever in central London. Tube is the best option and the night bus the next on late nights out (depending on where you go-discretion needed there).
Where are you staying?

Londoner moving off to study at Bristol. Respect urban solitude. No one will want to talk to you on the tube. Ever.

Search for your uni on facebook, there will likely be facebook groups full of students starting there this year. Makes posts asking if anyone needs a room, there is always someone who needs accommodation so you might have luck. There might be a forum for you uni on here too so that's worth a shot.

As for going out and getting back home I suppose it may take a while to get used to the area, but maybe if you find a flatmate you could go with and come back with them on nights out?

You could try to find a flat share near uni. This website is good http://www.spareroom.co.uk/
Tube is the best way around London. It's fairly cheap but you shouldn't talk on the tube. It's sort of an unwritten law.

Thanks for replying (:
Contacting the accommodation would be really helpful come to think of it.
I'm staying in Central, near tower bridge.
Only problem is not used to getting back by myself, and the thought of getting the tube or bus at 3/4 am on my one scares the hell out of me.

Tube doesn't run that late
Night buses are pretty fine tbh you could always go back with someone if you feel uncomfortable

So doesn't that go along with don't talk to strangers? Because I've pretty much got that down :yep:
.. Or is there something I need to know about people on the Tube especially.

I'm guessing it could be difficult to find someone the lives the same route and I doubt that people would be willing to take me back first and then go home. Ahh, the hassle :/

Forgive me if I'm being really stupid but at these fresher events it is just my uni right? (If so I doubt anyone from my uni will be staying at tje same place.) Or will all the unis around London be present?

And yeah, I have tried looking for a thread, no luck, I even made one myself.. No replies, I feel unloved. Aha.
Thanks for your advice though! (:

The surrounding area of tower bridge is popular with students from London. Are you south of Tower bridge? I.e towards Old Kent Road way? I bet you will find people who go back your area way.
Always keep emergency black can cash on you:smile:

Depends what the events are. I went to Uni in London and the majority of events I went to were specifically held by and for my Uni. But I did go to some unofficial ones where most uni's in London go!
Not sure if someone already said this but how about contacting your Uni RE: looking for a roommate? They might have info of others looking for rooms

ah really? Ok well there are other ways to find roommates. Sometimes Gumtree.com can be helpful. Or tracking down (maybe through TSR?) people in other Uni's of london. Near Tower bridge is a pretty attractive location for those at Kings on Guys Campus so you never know!

If I remember correctly most of it was word of mouth! But other clubs in London hold Freshers events for everyone. Places like Tiger Tiger (although they may have stopped this), Piccadilly Institute, Sports cafe to name a couple.

Is your uni part of ULU? Because they hold a couple of events too usually

Don't worry . Soon enough you'll find a knot of people and someone will mention "let's go here tonight" etcetc and it will progress from there! I know it can seems daunting but you will love London. It's a great city to be in. It can seem intimidating but after a few months you'll realise how small it actually seems!!
Feel free to PM me if you have any other qs about London/Uni
