What colour is this in neutral solution. I know it turns purple when it reacts with a phenol, but what colour is it normally?

That was what I thought originally, but then I remembered the whole thing about transition metal ions forming coloured solutions. I think orange would make sense anyway, as iron often seems to form orange/brown compounds and stuff.

it is pale purple, but hydrolyses to yellow. the hexaqua complex doesn't stick around for very long as the iron (III) is v. charge dense.
