Weekly budget help!?!?

Hi everyone! Starting at Kent in under a month (Woo hoo!!) and cant wait. I've been doing calculations and trying to get an idea of how much money I'll have and whether or not I can go the first year without working while at uni - I will, however, be working in the holidays.

At the moment I have an estimated £85 per week without touching my overdraft (£500 interest free) or £101 if I used all of it (i'm gonna try not to!) This includes all student finance, holiday earnings etc. I'm living on campus and have already taken accommodation costs away. I'm also going self catered.

So what do people think? I know its quite subjective - some people can spend next to nothing and others the complete opposite, but to you personally does this sound like enough to live comfortably, or is it going to be tight or simply not enough!? If you're 2nd/3rd year how much roughly have you been spending? Thanks for any help you can give!

I had roughly the same budget as you last year, my advice is to find a job, I sometimes really struggled. I had some rather large expenses which weren't expected which of course meant that I had to use my overdraft. If you want to be really frugal it can be done, but you will be much more comfortable with that extra bit of cash in your pocket. I got a job as a student ambassador for my uni which pays quite well but you don't get to work that often but at least its' something.

How did you find balancing work, study and a social life? Only I kind of have to be aiming for a 2:1 minimum, preferably a first for my career path and I dont want to end up spending my entire 3 years at uni working or studying!

Well, I managed a 2:1 without spending my whole time studying, from my time in the year I reckon I spent about 5% working 50% studying and 45% socialising but I guess it depends on what course you do as some require a lot more independent work than others. I got 63.5% which isn't amazing but my programming module held me back (I do Computing and I got 42% for that) but my other modules were much better 59%-73%. I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to not leave work until the last minute, it's a lesson everyone learns very quickly. I plan to get a 'proper' job this year so I might lose a bit of time of socialising but I'd rather sacrifice that than be up to my ears in debt.
