History at Bristol

Hey, just wondering whether we had anyone on here that is currently studying History at Bristol? What's the department like, particularly the medieval areas, how much choice do you get in the first year etc? Thanks.
Medieval is strong - includes staff like Prof Ronald Hutton and has a cross subject Research Centre for postgraduate. BUT this isnt the only strength, there are other groups of staff/research students working on topics concerned with the British Empire, the Holocaust, history of Shanghai , Latin America, Inter-war USA etc etc.

This is the link to the UoB History Handbook - as well as a whole load of formal/regulation stuff there is a bit about the DEpt and an outline of the course : http://www.bristol.ac.uk/history/pdfs/ug/handbook.pdf

Choice on the optional modules will vary from year to year depending on staff availability, new staff interests etc so hard to predict exactly what choice you will get or your chances of getting your first choice - usually the Dept is responsive and expands teaching to demand but there is always a limit to how far this can stretch in reality. You'll get 'talked at' about all this once you arrive.
