Self-teaching AS World Development

I currently study Government and Politics, Geography and Economics, and having just finished them at AS Level, I am predicted A*A*A at A2. I’d previously taken Chemistry alongside these, but dropped it after getting a U grade in my January exam.

I’m planning to apply to Exeter, Sheffield, Lancaster, Royal Holloway and possibly Durham. My UMS scores in Government and Politics and Geography (94% and 88% respectively) made me realise that I could potentially apply for BA Geography at Durham which has an A*AA entry requirement, but I think I’d have little chance with only 3 AS Levels.

World Development is a subject I could potentially do. My school don’t offer it, but it fits in well with my current studies and interests and doesn’t appear to be extremely time-consuming, so I’d still be able to dedicate the bulk of my time to my other three. I'm fully aware that it's one of the least respected A Levels, but that doesn't bother me as my other three are.

I’m considering asking my school if I’d be allowed to do it, provided I cover the costs of the examination and if my Geography teachers are willing to moderate my portfolio work.

Has anyone had any experience of self-teaching a subject that isn’t taught at their school and how do you go about asking your Head of Sixth/Head of Geography if you can do this?
