From IT job to Comp Sci degree

So I have been working within IT for the past 3 years, I have moved up quickly at work and I am currently a Network Technician at one of the most modern hospitals in the UK. While I do love computers I feel like in 5 years I am not going to be happy with the direction I am headed, switching/routing just does not engage my creative side.

I am considering quitting work and doing a computer science degree at Nottingham, once completed I would look to get more into software/solution development rather than just IT support that I have worked my way through so far. It is a massive decision to make, I would be applying as a mature student (22 years old) and I currently have enough money/few responsibilities to go to uni.

Of course my biggest concern is I would be leaving a job that most graduates would kill for at a place that is sure to develop me into a great Network specialist. I would go from making 26k~ a year (with overtime/oncall) to 0 and back into full time education.

Has anyone done this or considered this before? Any pitfalls that have gone unseen?
I do know that a degree is not a guaranteed job but in the long run my goal is to run my own business and be successful in my career, something that is near impossible to do as a support techie.

Thoughts?

I say either keep your job and go and study university part time for Computing degree or just go for the Computer Science degree. Your experience would help you get good job after university so I wouldn't worry about that.

Unfortunately there are no part time courses close to work.

I may apply for a career break through work and see how that goes.

"Staff with more than two years service can apply to take an unpaid break from work for up to five years for domestic reasons. Return to work would be on the original terms and conditions. Further details are available in the career break policy."

Seems perfect if I manage to get it.

From being a mature student myself, going from work, to Uni, then back into work, I'd say that experience far outweighs that of a degree.

Stick to your job, maybe do an evening course if you can. There is not much that Uni can teach you, apart from referencing and writing to an academic standard.
Have you considered the OU?
