Universities are bastards for things like this. Just think of the money I could have made playing online poker had they not blocked it

Hey, basically, heard lots of things in the past about port-blocking etc making it impossible to play certain games, wondering whether anyone at Reading could tell me whether it's possible to play World of Warcraft using the uni's web, cheers

ps. Yes, I'm a sad sad addict :frown:

I play online games, but do it AT HOME.

Uni is not the place for playing online games, or holing yourself up in a room. It's unlikely you'll ever get a better chance for socialising and having fun with new people.

You'd think that but all the lads in my block were playing online poker, they'd all enter the same table and give each other bant!! Was abit random... Oh! And after dinner (was in catered halls) they'd all go and play Counterstrike (whatever that is!) against each other!! Was a pretty big social thing between them.

Pretty sure you can play WoW. If the ports are blocked you can speak to ITS about it, and as long as you're nice and explain what ports and why they aren't too bitchy about unblocking them (unless its illegal/porn  )

Do they allow FTP?

As in, could I upload files to my own web hosting account, without it being blocked?

Yes, you can use FTP to upload files to your own web-hosting account on the Internet.

I can deal with ssh tunneling, I guess I should figure out whether WoW uses ie settings or what now, and thanks for the lecture Journalistix, and I'm aware you'll probably find this statement as "sad" as my question, but I've found several good friends through WoW and other internet type places (irc, forums) which is more than I can say for real life. Wow, that sounded bitter....ah well

I know of quite a few people playing WoW in halls, and certainly any game I've tried runs through halls (Wantage) - this is only true of the uni halls though. RSV and St.G could be different, and probably are (I couldn't get anything to work when I was in RSV, not even rsync to update gentoo :frown: ).
