Do I have the right to study in Scotland fee free?

Hi,

I'm born in germany and have lived there all my life.
My dad was born in scotland and grew up there until he was 20.
I only have a british passport, no german one.
My question is, does that give me the right to study in scotland in dundee for example fee free?
Thanks a lot xxx

Although I'm not completely sure I'd say that your chances are quite good! Standard undergraduate tuition fees at Dundee for example are £1820. Scottish students and those coming from EU countries are eligible for full funding which means that the SAAS (Student Awards Agency for Scotland) pays your fees. However, you won't be eligible if you come from the rest of the UK. I guess they'd classify you as an EU student though (This sentence applies: "My home is NOT in Scotland or the rest of the UK and I am an EU national"), so chances are they will pay your fees!

This is what Dundee says about tuition fees for Scottish and EU students:
http://www.dundee.ac.uk/admissions/fees_funding/tuition_fees.htm

And here's the link to the SAAS website (select "Eligibility" on the left and read through what they say):

If I were you, I'd probably call SAAS to ask about this! I'm sure that they'll be able to tell you excatly whether or not you can study fee free! I hope this helps at least a little!

Basically since you have lived in Germany all your life, the clause on fees that states that you must have been resident in Scotland or an EU country (not England, Wales or Northern Ireland) which Germany is, means that SAAS should pay your fees. Eligibility has got nothing to do with your nationality or what passports you hold.
