Ok, there was a vacancy for temps and I applied online- and then it said that personality thing had been 'successful' (what?) and I have to phone some number to arrange an 'instore assessment'. Can anybody please tell me what this is all about?? Is instore assessment groups, interviews or what.

I am probably rambling about things already said so will read back though this and see, arh.

I was right What a fruitless post ^ !

Update: have phoned the Marks and Spencer recruitment line and some guy eventually answered- he was not Indian-sounding, and was very nice ('are you nervous', 'good luck') and all, and the interview thing is on Monday. I am very scared.
Also, I think I sort of messed up in the online application where it said 'Can you work Saturdays/late nights' because I replied 'no' to saturdays as I have voluntary work starting at 2, which disrupts with the afternoon but won't with the morning, but we shall see. I need to get confident and prepared in just three days.

Paintedfolk - mention that you can work Saturday mornings in the interview, but you didn't realise at the time (when you applied online) that you could!

Person_34 - it's highly unlikely, best to ask your store before you apply... usually they offer students 2 hours here and there and a full day Saturday (did at my store!!) or some other random hours... You never know though!!

Sweetie999 - which store did you work at?!?! Lucky!! Highest i ever received was £6 summat one Christmas as that was a bonus!!

Ok- I went, it honestly was not that bad- I was quite calm and confident, I surprised myself even.
It wasn't as complicated as other people's experiences suggest either- no real interview with those questions even, I brought my CV etc and they didn't really look at that, just about hours and then a role play with a member of staff for about 10 minutes with those picture cars- advising for a buffet thing. The two ladies who interwiewed etc were really lovely... I think it went ok but we shall see

Yea they take aaaaaages to answer sometimes, out of frustration i just let it ring and the guy picked it up after like 25 ringgs i swear. i really hope i dont have to do all of the whole training thing again coz i worked for them earlier this year(i doubt it as they'll have to pay me again). has any one else had any experience of going back to work for m&s, did they have to do the full training process again?

I happened to be applying online for a job at M&S, and there's a question that asks for two references. I have never had a job, only work experience, so should I answer no to the following question:

Can you provide details of two professional referees with full
addresses including postcodes?

Is my work experience employer and the name of a teacher okay?

Yes, mine rung forever too until the guy answered, I almost put the phone down.
^I think that would be ok- maybe form tutor/head of year or any teacher who knows you- maybe work experience but depends how long ago though, you could always put a family friend, anybody who knows you well but isn't a schoolfriend or a relative.

Does it matter whether you apply online or by phone? Are they any different becauase I have a card which I got from the store which says to ring a number and choose option 1 and you will have to answer questions about your personality for 20 mins. What questions do they ask you?

Thanks,

Can i just say how utterly stupid marks and spencer recruitment is. I applied online, found a vacancy, got asked some personality questions. Fair enough. However, they were in the format of groups of four statements, one of which you had to put as 'least like me' and one 'most like me'. They were all positive things like 'I work well in a team' and 'I am confident'. So how are you supposed to put one as 'least like me' if they all are like you to some extent? Anyway, having answered 12 or so such questions, they rejected me, without so much as knowing my name. That made me really mad, but I thought i'll apply by phone. Exactly the same, except this time I tried to play the system. It was 12 'how would you act if..' multiple choice questions. Except ALL OF THE RESPONSES WERE LOGICAL! So i answered based on what seemed most logical and what i thought they'd be looking for. And then the phone rejected me this time. This time they didn't know ANYTHING about me except my responses to those questions. What makes me a worse applicant than anyone else

Might actually complain to them.

I've also applied online, and I found it all quite easy, although a couple of the "most like/least like" things needed thinking about. But then I was a stupid fool and forgot to write down the phone number to ring. Could anyone else who's done this already possibly let me know what it is? Thanks in advance!

So that personality questionaire was actually screening?
I found it incredibly hard too- half of you is trying to be honest and answer the question truthfully, and the other half is trying to guess what they would want you to put, but on many, I did feel this is me, this is me, this is me too. Oh heck.
They haven't contacted me back yet- since monday morning. I assume they are getting references or whatever, but not sure if I should wait and see (I think I probably stand a good chance) or ring around other places to ask for vacancies. Getting slightly worried
