Taking a PC

Hey,
So I'll be coming to Lancaster this week as a first year. Now, my problem is, I don't currently have a laptop, but I do have a custom PC rig which I built earlier this year.

My questions are :

1. Are people allowed to use full PC's in their rooms
2. Do people generally do this in first year? Or would I stick out.

Hope they're not mainly COD and FIFA players...

Couldn't tell you - I never felt the need to join and find out, despite being a gamer myself. Far too many other cool things going on.

They're primarily PC gamers like LoL and DotA but have a range of stuff I think. Here's more info. https://www.facebook.com/groups/lugamingsoc/

You are definitely allowed your own computer unless you know it's going to combust when you plug it in. You do not need a laptop. Certainly don't need it for lectures. Hand written notes are much faster for me to take and you could type them up afterwards but I just work in exercise books so I have it kept together anyway.

I read that the NAT is strict for xbox live, is there any point bringing a console if you cant really play online that much? I dont want to bring a console and TV for no reason as it would just use up valuable space.

But there must be limitations, right? I also read that the more modern EA games don't seem to work.

I took a PC but the problem with that was whenever I wanted to use it, I had to go sit in my room alone. With a laptop, I had a choice where I'd use it. I took my PC home and bought a laptop after about a week as it just meant I was hardly ever on the computer as I was attempting to socialise, and I couldn't handle not being able to use the internet 24/7 :frown:

Many people in my flat in first year had no problems with Xbox Live. I'd take your Xbox tbh, it'll earn you cred, especially if there's a lot of people in your flat

I'm taking my custom PC and expecting to play Battlefield 4 with no trouble. I'm also expecting to play the PlayStation 4 online. I read in another thread that people were experiencing troubles with online gaming, but everything worked effortlessly when they recently removed the squid servers or something of the sort. Any information regarding this?

Haha, yeah. I guess it could be a great icebreaker since no one will really know each other!

I'm taking my computer with me, but I don't expect to do much work on it as I can imagine the halls being quite loud compared to the calm of the library! Other than the fact I can't afford a laptop, how else would I watch the season finale of Breaking Bad?!

Invest in a good set of comfortable, preferably noise-cancelling headphones is my advice. They'll be a godsend if you end up with flatmates who never shut the **** up.

The proxy servers have been gone for nearly two years now, as has already been said you'll get outbound NAT with no UPNP. How that fairs with PSN.... I'm afraid I don't know.
