Specialisation of epithelial cells.

I understand the basics of epithelial cells (that there are two types, squamous and ciliated) but about the squamous epithelial cells, if their purpose is to be a smooth surface for substances to pass over how can they have microvilli?

Can you cite a specific source as to your information? As far as I know, it is the columnar epithelium that has microvilli, for it is the site of absorption and secretion etc. There are other epithelial cell types, such as cuboidal, columnar, etc. This page explains it nicely.
