Again, obviously! The general standard of professors is the best though, across the university. How do I measure this? Individual reputation; research produced; number of nobel prize winners. I understand that most of this is hard to compare, however.

Across the board doesn't really mean much for your average undergraduate who is only taught by certain academics. Even so, across the board the research prowess of Oxbridge is not much different to Imperial College, LSE and Warwick, for example.

America has heard of the Beetles. Doesn't make them any good :p:

They also employ people who don't have Oxbridge degrees, and have been known to reject Oxford alumni in favour of other graduates who possessed better all round skills.

Whether the Beatles/Oxbridge are any good is not what is at question. I suggested that Oxbridge has a great reputation - the Beatles do, too :p:

Point two is moot. I wasn't suggesting that they solely employ Oxbridge graduates (although some do), rather that having Oxbridge on your CV precludes you from no job, provided the your other characteristics are okay.

The beatles suck! Muscially untalented and lyrically inept!

As for employment, Oxbridge doesn't preclude you - but it doesn't give you the golden tickey some of the Oxbridge mythologists would have you believe!

We're not just talking about undergraduates, though. Why assume that?

LSE and Imperial have few or no Arts departments so to say that their research prowess across the board is as good as or near to Oxbridge's is ridiculous, I'm afraid. I've already said it's hard to prove an institution's research prowess, but I'd wager that Oxford or Cambridge's beats Warwick's*.

*I can't be bothered to find figures to support this, and concede that I may be wrong.

A post I am in entire agreement with
Good employers will see good talent regardless of where it's come from.

And that IS a well known fact.
I hate oxford for the simple fact they rejected me and since then have tried to convince myself that it isn't that great to go to Oxford, a sin I think many of us are guilty of. I have done the whole 'well I don't think I would fit in' rubbish and tried to convince myself that I would be completely unable to fit in. Another aspect of my 'oxbridge' syndrome is convincing myself that going to that university wouldn't make that much difference when going for a BVC or TC after my LLB, hmmm. Maybe we are all a little bitter (or just me :p: )

LSE has no arts departments? History is not an art? Philosophy is not an art?
Of course LSE and Imperial are specialist, but the are still large institutions that conduct a lot of wordclass research. "Across the board" means across the range of subjects offered in this case.

It is hard, but it has been attempted (the RAE, factors in league tables). The indicators show that Warwick is right up there in terms of research.

Lol i dont think everyone's bitter... Ethereal has no reason to be, for example... he's already got his 2:1 and his TC secured. I'd say that his argument is the less biased.

Tut tut - a lack of attention to detail. I said 'little or no' Arts departments when referring to LSE and Imperial. LSE only has a very few Arts subjects and Imperial - as far as I'm aware - has none.

"Across the board" does not mean 'across the range of subjects offered' - that's an egregious misinterpretation. We might start comparing St. Martins to Edinburgh next  How you can even begin to suggest that specialist institutions contribute more research than all-encompassing universities baffles me, I'm afraid. They can only do research on a subset of subjects!

Anyway, this argument is stale and I see no conclusion in sight: I'll agree to disagree.
