Unless I'm missing something, the uni wouldn't care at all. It may be an issue for TV Licensing if you don't have a license though.

Yeah I don't have a TV license. How likely is it for me to get caught/in trouble? Or if I can persuade my mate with a TV license to let me watch the football in halls would that be ok?

If you're watching the football in your room, then it won't be covered under anyone else's license. Since you say you'd be streaming from your PC, I'm assuming the PC would stay in your room!

While illegal, I'm not sure of the likelihood of your being caught. When I was in halls, I contacted the TV Licensing company to tell them I wasn't going to be watching live TV (which was true), and they sent me an exemption letter, and to contact them if the circumstances changed.

They may catch you, and if they do, I believe it's a hefty fine, and possibly a criminal record (check out their website for information on that though).

Personally, I wouldn't risk it, and would just watch on iPlayer or whichever channel it is you're watching on catch-up.

P2P and illegal streams are obviously against their policy, but chances are you won't get caught because so many people do it.

I used to stream like crazy in halls
The main and pretty much only thing to avoid is torrenting a ****load of movies.
nah everyone does it :ninja:
You do realise that the majority of your hall, and every hall on campus will be downloading or streaming something they shouldn't be. Movies, tv shows, games, live tv. Is it illegal? Yes Will they care? No.

My university sent an email a week ago saying it's going to be cracking down on illegal streaming and downloading this year and cooperating fully with their IPS in their ongoing investigations into these matters.

We have to log into the network with our names and ID so anything we do will be linked to it. Not sure it's worth it anymore.

If universities tried to act on every student who torrented, downloaded illigally, streamed - and such..

They wouldnt have any time to do anything else.. let alone have any students left!

Not every student, no. But trust me they will string up a few just to give the illusion they are doing something about it

TL;DR - you'll still be covered by your parents' licence if you're in your room watching live TV on your laptop and it's only being powered by its internal batteries. If this doesn't apply, you'll need your own licence.
It's illegal
