options for becoming a social worker

I am choosing my options at Christmas and want to become a social worker is child development a good subject to take also what others are good, do i need a language also a youth social worker not for adults or elderly people.

A girl i went to college with went on to do social work. She was on my course- doing a level 3 diploma in childcare and education. She then went on to do social work at derby uni- where she had been given an unconditional offer.
