What To Choose (Please Help)

hey fellow students,

I am currently studying an art foundation Diploma Level 3 course (which is great fun) having just finished up with my A-Levels at Aquinas College.

However I have started to have some doubts regarding what i want to do career wise and i wanted some advice.

firstly I have always been greatly interested in graphic design, but studying this course for a few weeks has made me realise that i'm not as talented or accomplished as most other people, i have started to lean towards illustration instead but i am worried that this subject might prove to focused around drawing which i am not as comfortable with (I prefer to work digitally or in collage style which is my strong point).

I also have a deep interest in English, i occasionally enjoy writing short stories and i have had no trouble in the past with getting high grades in English coursework (A-A*'s) and which i enjoyed doing anyway.

so here is my question, can someone give me a piece of advice or a direction they think i should lean towards for the future?

should i continue with the competitive graphic design route which i am feeling uneasy about?

Move towards illustration which i am finding more and more interesting?

Or choose a universally good degree in English which will open up many opportunities in the future?

Thanks student buddies x

Welcome to the site! You're unlikely to find help for this in the Welcome Lounge - that forum is just for people to introduce themselves rather than asking other questions. I've moved your thread to the Universities forums, where you should be able to find others who can help you.

Go with your instinct and what you can see yourself doing in the future. Although graphics is competitive, it can pay well (£200 a day for good freelancers). I'm doing a foundation in graphics also
Good luck

If you couldn't decide between graphic design & illustration you could always apply for a course that gives you the option to explore both. I'm currently at Hertfordshire University studying graphic design, in my third year. The course is graphic design & illustration, in your first year here, you get to study both. Then you choose which one you'd like to specialise in for your remaining two years. I'm sure there's a few other Uni's who do this also!

You say "i'm not as talented or accomplished as most other people" I felt exactly the same (& still do most of the time!) I studied an art foundation before as well, just like you & I literally didn't do anything I would say is even remotely like the work I do at Uni. I think I did one piece of digital work on my art foundation & now that's all I do at Uni! I have learned SO much on my course, looking back it does seem like I didn't actually know anything about graphic design before haha!

Also, this is something I just randomly came across.. http://search.ucas.com/course/summary/48640/design-illustration-graphic-novels-and-childrens-publishing?Query=graphic&ProviderQuery=glyndwr&Vac=1&AvailableIn=2014&page=1&providerids=1021&ret=results
Maybe something like this could kind of combine all the subjects you're interested in?!

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
Hi, I think I am having the same sort of problem (although I am applying to do a foundation next year so a year behind). I think you should carry on with the course and see how your interests develop. From what I've heard you have until March to apply to art courses and January for normal stuff on UCAS, so you will have more time to explore graphics/illustration on your course.
Maybe think about whether or not you want to spend the next 3 years doing Graphics/Illustration/English. If you're doing something you enjoy, you'll get better at it anyway because you'll *want* to work harder.

Hope that helped.
