retail and appearance?

When working in clothing retails, does appearance matter? To me it seems it does..
When I talk about appearance, I talk about the way someone looks, particularly their face and hairstyle.. It feels like some retails they prefer their employees to look "stunning" others they don't mind as much.

Just curious on other peoples perspectives on this.
And yes, no one would go into an interview looking like a total mess, but it seems that if you aren't particularly attractive, then your chances are reduced and confidence is then required to be shown..

Also, anyone else seem to find that it is more difficult to find a part time job at the moment? Seems like there is a lot of competition
I think to an extent it does. If you're working for cotton traders I'm sure tey don't mind, but if it was somewhere like topshop they'll be looking at things like your hair because they want fashionable people to represent their brands. I wouldn't say if you were ugly they'd say no, but if you didn't make an effort..they'd say no..haha
