So, what is Crooks presented as? What traits do you think he has? He's quite a lonely character - think about why this is (hint: the rest of the characters at the ranch are white). He's also quite defensive and reserved for the same reason.

Now that you have a few traits and reasons for them, look at how Steinbeck shows you that he's lonely - what similes, metaphors, words and other language devices does Steinbeck use to expose Crooks' personality and being to the reader? Think about these and I'm pretty sure you'll have a couple of good paragraphs :wink:
