Mitigating circumstances?

I'm applying for a graduate role that requires a 1st, and I got a mid range 2:1

During the final parts of my 2nd year, my Uncle died and my Mum was sent to prison within the same week. This put me in a bad way and I didn't want to discuss it with anyone as I was embarrassed so I just kept myself to myself and didn't go to Uni much.

My 2nd year grades turned out not so good, on the cusp between 2:1 and a Third.

I can't say for sure if being in a better mental state in my 2nd year would have improved me enough to get a 1st, but should I mention this is in the form or just not bother applying?

I would really like the job..
If it requires something that you don't have, then you don't have anything to lose by providing an explanation. If you could get a good reference, that would help, but unfortunately things are so competitive that unless you have some seriously amazing experience you probably don't have all much of a chance, sorry.
