Im looking at a course, At RG uni's there is no placement years, but at mid rank ones there is.
Why is this?

Because the 'mid'ranking' universities are often ex-polys which have generally specialised in a practical approach for practical subjects.

May I ask a few q's on this?

Did the university organize / openly offer / help you find the placement ?
Does this mean you go to another town and basically work / shadow for a company? (Any problems you found such as financing the full placement?)

The university advertises placements done by students in previous years on it's careers service website but there were none close to me...

I got lucky when I sent my CV to a pretty major company with a site near where I live.

Basically they paid me (£9/hr if you are interested though most placements either aren't paid or are NMW) to do work for them in their software department - I cannot discuss details as what I was working on is a trade secret at the moment - but it was quite cutting edge stuff.

However placements are usually reserved for people about to enter their final year - as I said I got lucky.

I genuinely have no idea... ask your uni careers office? I just got lucky getting one - which the company offered me again with a substantial pay rise...
