The tabloid press and media across Europe appear to be engaging in a continued attempt to stigmatise and attack Roma people. They have waged war on the Roma family who had the blonde girl in Greece, claiming that they had trafficked her, stolen her, etc. These are traditional and long-running slurs against 'gypsies' and they are not well founded in fact. In the Greek case, it has turned out that the Roma family had been given the child by a very poor Bulgarian family, as they had stated to the police when asked about it. In Ireland, the child belonged to the family.

Attacks on Gypsies/Roma are a form of race hate and this type of smear is very similar to the race hate slurs against Jews that have circulated in Europe for centuries. The apparent outrage that a 'Gypsy' family could have a 'blonde' child is extremely racist.
