Why do so many University's offer courses that only require 240-280 UCAS points?

Admittedly it is the secondary (met) Uni's, but still. Engineering in my mind has always come across as being extremely difficult, so what gives?

I've had some trouble while studying my A-levels, and my grades have suffered. I got B-D-D last year in Mathematical and Computer orientated subjects, and I have managed to be predicted A-C-D for this year.

A-C-D is around 260 UCAS points, and plenty of Uni's have Engineering courses that I can apply for. Why is this? Will they be rubbish courses?
I could also go for Quantity Surveying or another vocational subject. Any recommendations?
Cheers
