You're going to have to be a bit more specific as it will vary quite a bit from course to course, especially between sciences, social sciences and humanities.
Have you tried looking in any books about dissertations, like the Palgrave one? Some universities have these in the library, and the larger Waterstones do too. You could have a skim through in store to see if it seems like it would help answer your questions.
