The police do take on students as Special Constables - I had a friend who did it for Avon and Somerset Constabulary whilst he was a student

What do you do when you volunteer? How much time a week do you have to give? Do you need to pass fitness tests and stuff like that? Do you get a free uniform?

I can't say I know much about it really, but he used to go out on patrol as a normal copper would - he had a warrant card and full powers of arrest. He definitely got a uniform too - I remember him saying that he had had a repairman round who was utterly convinced that the policeman's hat in the hallway must have been nicked!

At the point where I knew him, he was taking an interruption of studies (mid uni gap year) but he never mentioned it as having taken up too much time whilst he was studying.
