It can if I'm caught on the counter-attack, in theory...but my wingback is very quick and is capable of tracking back to defend My current scoring record of 8 goals for and 2 against (those 2 consisting of a tap-in rebound and a penalty) in five matches shows that my defence is capable of holding their own.
My usual formation is;
FC FC
AM AM
MR
DM
WBL
DC DC DR
GK
I'm new to the game, but this is what works for me. I scored 80+ goals last season with Atalanta in Serie B and got promoted, but I do tend to concede when my defense fails to mark properly.

My usual favourite formation is a 4-4-2 with diamond midfield (one DMC, one AMC, and two wing players).
Its pretty successful at all levels, with the right players.
Depending on the opposition, i sometimes play the AMC, in centre midfield, and have one of the strikers dropping back into the AM role (not moving them, just having the run backwards), which works well against superior sides. I tend to have the wingers runs as far as the AM line, but if a side is playing with three centre backs, i take advantage having them run to the forward position (and tend to play AM/F type midfielders in that position anyway). If i'm not able to get the firepower up front (or forwards not even getting the ball), i have the two wing players runs to either side of the AMC, putting more pressure on the opposition (especially effective against sides without at least one holding midfield player, in the DMC position, though that relies on very good full backs, especially defensively, not to be over-run by the opposition wingers (though from experience, the opposition on Football Manager don't use wing players as much, or as well, as in RL, especially not with overlapping fullbacks).
I'm currently testing out some defensive formations for playing against far superior sides (a division or two above, at least), using two holding midfield players, in front of three centre backs, having the centre backs move wide as the ball moves to that side, with the DM in front moving back to cover, then playing two wingers, to AMC and a lone front man.
Has anyone ever used the editor, to start up their own side, with no players at all, putting themselves in the bottom division of a country, then see how long it takes to work their way up, because thats my next personal challenge.

You must play a DM on FM games.. Make sure his Passing, Tackling, Accelration, Pace and Decisions are good. then he'll be class

It depends on the formation, but i completely know what you mean, i almost always play with one. I've got last years version of FM (i only update every 3 or 4 years), and i always try to buy either guarin or kompany for that position, as guarin starts out great, and kompany is so young, but gets so good real quickly, unless i'm playing a lower league side, where i always go for an older player (30ish), for the lower prices, but still real high stats.

I reinstalled Windows and lost my 17-season HSV game
But never fear! Danny Schweinsteiger (my FM name) is back, and back with a job to do - yes, St Pauli of the German Regional Division North shall be taken to new heights. New heights like those of FC Bayern, Hamburg and Schalke.
Step one, win the German Regional Division North - done!
Step two, win the German Second Division - about to embark upon..!

I think so. I don't know how well it will work, but it brings new meaning to starting from scratch.
Have to decide the right sort of things to do with the club, money and everything, but still, i'm thinking about the best way to go about it.
I mean no players, no money, nothing, is a bit too far...

Well until i get the net at home, i can't join in with it lol. But when i get round to it, then sure, sounds good.
I was thinking something like having 1,000,000 or so to start out with, and build the entire club up from that.
Maybe have a TSR competition, see who can get to a certain goal (like winning the premiership, for example), in the quickest number of years.
yeh..sounds good...you should definitely start it...i'll help if ya want i suppose...
Problem is first, different people have different versions, so there'd need to be some way to account for that, and second, theres no real way to stop people from cheating on it lol.
