Legal qualification – post TC

Hello,
Could somebody please explain to me how does one get qualified into one area of law?
During the TC a candidate sits in 4 departments and once he is done with it he will just chose one area he liked most? How does it work?
Can he pick 1 or several areas?
If I wish to qualify as EU competition solicitor, is it possible to do TC in a firm which does not have EU competition department and then subsequently ‘somehow’ become EU competition specialist?
Sorry, but I am new to it all and I find it a bit confusing!

If you want to go into say, EU competition, you should ideally do your TC at a firm that has EU competition and eventually qualify in that department.

However, on a more general basis, once you qualify as a solicitor, you can practise whatever you want. It doesn't mean that if you qualify into, say, IP law, that means you can only practise IP law for the rest of your career.

So you can do your TC at a firm that does not do competition law, and eventually, at least theoretically, join a firm that does do EU competition. It's certainly not impossible.
