Maths question regarding booze.

Right so a man was arrested in Grimsby for being 6 times over the limit. He was arrested at 4pm but was apparently drunk as early as 8am. A few friends and I were trying to work out how many pints of Stella he'd consumed, assuming that:

a) A pint of stella is 2.3 units.
b) A unit leaves your blood stream after an hour.
c) The limit is 4 units.

I have it pegged at around 17 pints minimum, assuming he needed some time to actually get drunk but I just have no idea whether this is right.

I'd also be interested in knowing his average pints per hour.

Assume he was as drunk at 8am, and maintained the same level thoughout the day.

6 times over the limit implies 7 times the limit = 28 units in system at 4pm.
He'd have lost 8 units between 8am and 4pm.
So needed to have comsumed 36 units.
Drinking time to get up to 28 units, assuming 3 pints/hr ~ 28/7 = 4 hrs. During which he'd have lost another 4 units.

So, 40 units in all. = 40/2.3 ~ 17 pts :woo:
How can anyone manage 17 pints an hour on average and still live? :lolwut:

17 pts total, not per hr.

Oh right :colondollar:
Still, 17 pints is a lot. The guy must have deep pockets and a tolerant liver.

I doubt if there's anything left of his liver, or there soon won't be.

Fantastic thank you. My answer was correct but my method slightly out.

Yeah and isn't Stella expensive? Estimating a pint is about £3-£4, the guy must have spent £51-£68 when with that money, I can go to the cinema a few times over...

Doubt you can do anything more exciting than drink Stella in Grimsby. Even a train ticket out of the place will set you back most of that.

And 17pts is over 4000 kcal. So unless he works on an oil rig, he's going to be putting on the pounds, almost as fast as he's shelling them out.
