How many people were at your work experience/would have been in the audience? Not the biggest fan of presenting in front of loads of people! Haha

ooh, quite a lot! 50+ maybe! But you might be on a week with a lot less people, or they might not even do that this year! To be honest, it is quite an informal atmosphere a lot of the time, no one's gunna force you to present! You could just ask to only help on the research of the project, or something like that.

yep, a week long project in groups. We had a sheet with bullet points of what we should talk about, so we divided up the bullet points, then did our own research, and made our own slides before putting them together in one PowerPoint. We all then presented the section which we had researched. We were meant to present to all the other groups and lots of employees, etc, but our group managed to get out of it and we did it in a really informal setting to just a few members of staff, then they asked us a few questions afterwards.

May i ask what projects were about? Hard to research? o.O

It probably doesn't matter, if you didn't specify where you wanted to be, they will pick for you (that's what happened with me, although cuz I talked about liking economics, they decided to put me in Treasury services)

Honestly, it could be anything. They just wanna give you something to do, to change it up a bit, I guess - it's not to test you. I just wikipedia'd it!

yeah, i just found that problem when booking at travelodge cooper dean too... it seems that there needs to be an 18+ at all hotels. have no idea what to do now. either find a more informal b&b or just risk it and pretend we're 18. my mate looks old and with a fake scanned passport we may get away with it. what are you all thinking?

What are people wearing there? Full suit or just shirt and tie?

i'll go for a full suit on the first day, but then i'm sure it'll become slightly more informal ... so just a shirt
Shall we get the ball rolling on people's plans for accomodation?

Just got my confirmation. Is anyone else attending 30th June. Want to get to know a few people before.

Plus what other work experiences are you guys applying for?

Hiya, yeah - i applied for the weeks 30th June and 7th July. You there for 2 weeks? What department did you apply for?
I attended the work experience programme last year (Year 12) - Week started off with a presentation from the coordinators and a bit about the week ahead/JPM in general. I along with 2 others were unknowingly placed in the Technology department. We expressed our concerns with the interest in Banking and not technology to our 'mentors'. They were very helpful and gave us daily business projects to do which was quite fun as we were able to walk around the whole site asking people for their ideas (networking) which also led us to organise a meeting with a Vice President at JPM. The food is great with various outlets, also flowing hot drinks from a drinks machine in the Atrium. Lots of fun/informative events during the week in the Atrium - there was a cycling simulator which was quite fun, but very difficult when you've just had a heavy lunch and in a suit.

Applied to overlook the Investment Banking Team from 30th June to 4th July this year.

With regards to living, the confirmation email suggests some hotels where you can stay and the company shuttle bus will take you to the site free of charge. Last year I stayed at the Norfolk Royale Hotel, so had little trouble waiting for a bus, was near the city centre too so suited me, only downside was that it was pretty expensive. The afternoon bus service's come at specific times, and if for a reason I was late to catch the service, I was looking at a wait of around 15-30 mins for the next (a pain when there were few people I knew around). I chose to use the public bus instead which was made easy with a fellow intern from Bournemouth living only a few minutes away from the City Centre.

This year at the Cumberland Hotel, Bournemouth, which is just a short walk away from the Carlton hotel providing the Shuttle Service, reasonable rates and good reviews. Also provides a free pick up service from the train station.

Anyone applied for the same dates and for the IB team? Or planning to stay near the Carlton Hotel?
What's the nightlife like down there? I'm there from 21st July to 1st August. Obviously the weekend in between the two weeks would be when to go out.

Did you apply to look over the investment banking team or did you send them an email asking if you can? I sure I would enjoy doing that, I'm in Operations during the same period by the way!

I had applied to do investment banking - From what I was told last year it's not your wall street scene, its more of the back office of the deals (If I'm not wrong)

This is probably correct. 99% sure the investment banking team are all in Canary Wharf.

Applications ended a few weeks ago, ergh, I wanted to apply again for next summer. Glad you guys got places though!

I spent a week there last year, just after my GCSEs finished!

Do you know what department you will be in? I was in Treasury Services (TS), so I mostly know about that.

On the Monday morning, we got a talk and given information about the week, and sent off in small groups to our particular department. We were assigned two employees to be our sort of 'mentors', I guess, and we had a more casual chat with them, about what they do, and more specifically the Graduate Programme (one of the people I was with had just finished it and was a 'full' employee, while the other was still doing his rotations). After that, we spent a lot of the week visiting different sub-sections of TS, and speaking to people about their role in the company.

There was also a project which we were set, and given a few hours to complete every day. I was with two other people (one in year 12, and one year 13, who had studied A Level economics and knew a lot more about the company/economics/everything - I was pretty much there for the free food and something to do) and we researched 'money laundering' (we made a PP and gave our presentation on Friday afternoon).

Also, there was a stock trading game which we were timetabled to play for an hour each day (I actually found it fun, but the others didn't and so we only went on it once or twice).

An hour (or maybe longer) each day will be lunch. THEY HAVE THE BEST FOOD EVER. There is a main canteen which serves something different each day, one day it was a BBQ, once it was a stir-fry. It was bloody lush. There was also a diner, but I never went in there.
Also, there's a freeee hot drinks machine. I had about six mochas a day. It was heaven.

Also, there were so many people doing work experience the same week as me, lunch was also great for socialising! Met a few great people and had a lot of fun (unfortunately the people in my little group were ridiculously boring, so I REALLY looked forward to lunch).

Overall, I'd say if you're looking to work in an environment like that, and really want to learn, then you'll love it. We were swamped with information and I have a whole folder full of every single detail of TS. When I went, I really wasn't looking to work in banking/whatever it is they do, so I didn't appreciate so much the knowledge I could have benefited from. However, it was a great experience, and a real shame I can't go back next year. :frown:

If anyone has any specific questions or anything else, I'll be happy to help!

Ooh, operations could be interesting! I live fairly nearby, so I got a bus to Bournemouth every morning, then caught their minibus to the campus. The other people in my group were staying in hotels nearby and the minibus picked them up. Have you been given information about the minibus, etc?

Hi, since I've just finished my GCSE's and haven't studied economics properly before, is this going to be a big set back during the Work Experience?
