Too late to get involved with uni Societies, clubs, and sports?

I know its the middle of the year, but I really regret not really getting involved with any of these as soon as I came to uni  I know I can join up and get involved next year, so I'm not worried as such, but is it too late for me to start this year?

societies are pointless. it's basically paying money to the uni so you can socialise.

just join sports clubs tbh, and no it's not too late

A lot of universities have re-fresher fairs in the second semester for this exact reason. Just drop an email to a society you are interested and they should give you details. Not going to lie though, joining halfway can be a little awkward.

We have had people join this late in the society I'm in, its all good it's not like all members know each other anyway.

You'd be more than welcome to join the society I'm in :yep:

Its never to late to do anything, unless its specific to uni and you've already left xD

assuming your still there, as you say you are, you can go and take part in anything if you want (so long as there is no criteria) for example in my experience some sports clubs have try outs and dont take people on without that

but yeh its your time, your experience so make sure you get all you want out of it, I'm actualy out of education atm (well I do some distance learning atm) and im just getting involved in some new clubs n sports at 23 and tbh I havent been made to feel unwelcome or like a latecommer at all,

so I'd say go for it, you wont know until you try,

good luck!

Societies are great for finding people with similar interests who you might not meet on your course or in halls. You meet way more people by going to socials, especially if like me you live somewhere quiet. Most of them don't even cost that much. Definitely not pointless.

Some sports will let you join now but I know a lot at my university had deadlines in the first few weeks. It's not too late to join any societies though, friendship groups will probably have formed but most people at socials are up for meeting new people
I don't see why it would be. As has been mentioned, many universities have re-freshers fairs so there's no rule against it. Admittedly it could be harder to break into an establish friendship group if the society is small, but that shouldn't put you off. I joined a society at the start of my 2nd year which had very close relationships already, but I'm getting to know new people and am enjoying it. It might not happen immediately but you can easily overcome being the outsider.

might be good for socially awkward people that need to be a part of a 'society' so that they can socialise but in my case it's pointless

I run a society, and we welcome student who join throughout the year, in fact we encourage it. It's a great place to make new friends and also do something you are really interested in or want to try. Ask if you can go for a few taster sessions before signing up.

Societies aren't just about socialising by the way, unless you have no hobbies or interests outside your uni work of course.
Certainly not. At my university we are organising a refreshers fair; and there are several societies that I did not join until my second or even third year at university (although some of them are recently founded or revived).

You do realise the membership money goes to the society itself? And with a well run society, there's a lot more than socials (which are fun anyway). I've already been to Paris with one society and to our university's MUN conference run by another.
I'm going to start joining sports and societies next semester too, in fact one of the reasons I hardly joined any when I began is there was too much going on and I just wanted to take my time and settle in a bit, sort time management out and then look at which societies are the ones I would actually go to and enjoy
