What to read?

What would you consider to be the essential books to read/ things to cover before doing a politics and history/contemporary history degree? I've applied to go in september 2014 and dont currently study history. Thanks.

Essential reading - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Studying-History-Palgrave-Study-Skills/dp/1403987343 - for anyone even thinking of doing history at Uni.
Easy to read, well written book aimed at first year undergrads that will introduce you to the main 'ideas' about how/why we study history.

Depending on what type of politics course you are applying for (global politics, British politics, political philosophy etc) then there are lots of 'Introduction' books on Amazon that will be similar to the above.
