I'm not an expert, but I'd suggest that it might have something to do with circadian rhythm. I'm not sure if this changes as you age (which would explain why teenagers need a "lie in" relative to adults).
Personally, my best time to work is in the evening, but my best time to sleep is definitely 10pm-6am. If I get up late, like after half 8, I never seem to wake up properly and just feel tired all day.
Tbh i normally have an alarm set. Even on weekends if i have work to be done. Recently i haven't had work to do so have slept in till 11. The only probelm with this is just the amount of hours i lose in the day where i could have been doing productive things.

I find i work better with an early wake up but regular breaks during the day. For revision i'll often stop at dinner time then relax after dinner. If i have work due in i'll stay up later but only a few times has the work gone on until past 12 or so...
