Retaking this in june, got a B in it last year. Everyone doing chemistry in my year are retaking this exam except for about 2 people!
Haven't started revision for it yet though.

I'm resitting this exam too. I hate the inorganic stuff in this topic. :frown:

D :/

I started revision in the easter holidays and that was too late, so all I had time to do was cram and I barely did any past papers.

Don't make the same mistakes I did and start going over all the topics you covered from Sept!!

Yeah hopefully I wouldnt....

I need to learn how to recap Unit 1 whilst still studying Unit 2 if not I dont think Ill have the capacity to do the high grade questions when it comes to the exam.

Nice...well to give you exact figures we'll need to know exactly what you achieved for Unit 1 & 2 UMS wise. However from reading this I say if you get 2Bs in chem4 &5 you're looking good for a B as long as you dont screw up your EMPA?

ok then, so i should be aiming for b's. thanks:smile:
I think everyone doing A2 chemistry is retaking this exam lool
btw in the spec, it says "know that Mg(OH)2 is sparingly soluble" but all the revision material are saying that magnesium hydroxide is insoluble in water and that calcium/strontium hydroxide are sparingly soluble?

The spec is correct, it is sparingly soluble.

I need help with redox, Ive been alright with it until I saw this question.

On the Nelson thornes book, Q2 on page 163 it says:

2) Use oxidation states to balance the following equations

a) Cl2 + NaOH -----> NaClO3 + NaCl + H2O

My teacher said that we should separate it into 2 half equations so this is what I had in mind being that only the chlorine changes oxidation number :s-smilie:

2e- + Cl2 ------> 2NaCl (x6)

6H2O + Cl2 ----> 2NaClO3 + 12H+ + 12e-

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

2e- + Cl2 -----> 2Cl(-1) (x5)
Cl2 -----> 2Cl(+5) + 10e-

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The second one I have tried to form the half equation using the charges of the chlorine in the different compounds. Im so confused......

I was able to do it a few weeks ago, with different equations but I dont think Ive seen one like this as this was in the book and the books method seems different from my teachers.

All help appreciated thanks x

Same! I feel like it might be a little more straight forward this time round though, seeing as CHEM4 has similar topics :biggrin: hopefully, anyway!

Hey guys, anyone have a list of mechanisms we need to learn or a handy link to them? :smile:

Thanks, I have just finished making some nice posters on them - think I have them nailed now, actually more of an interesting topic than I first thought in class.
