Do we have to take the BMAT, or is that just for rcvs??
I'm not quite sure what you're asking?
The BMAT is an entrance exam that applicants applying for vet medicine at the RVC and Cambridge must sit. The RCVS is a register of qualified veterinary surgeons and nurses fit to practise in the UK. All people who graduate from any of the UK vet schools (apart from Surrey, currently that's not accredited but it almost certainly will be by the time people start graduating from there) can join, but people from other countries may have to pass an exam to get in.
In short, you'll need to take the BMAT if you want to apply to Cambridge or the RVC. As far as I know, you won't have to sit the RCVS exam as long as you qualify here in the UK.

Hey sorry to picky, but the RCVS is the regulatory body that regulates the veterinary profession and is not a register in itself, however vets and nurses register on the RCVS register. So as the regulatory body it has a register for qualified vets and nurses.
I think I did some weeks in a vet practise when I was 15 (nothing substantial). However, I did most of my work experience in year 11 so from the age of 16 continuing on into A level years (where I didn't have a week free at all all of summer and most half terms were dedicated to placements too).
You don't need to be doing work exp from a very, very young age. Most unis care about more recent stuff
Haha i chose the maths one as well!! Its soo hard!! My compulsory ones were eng lit and lang, philosophy and ethics, spanish, maths, and i chose triple science, add maths, pe, and history...
Maybe liverpool/bristol, or edinburgh/glasgow, probably not rvc or cambridge.... it'll be interesting to see how surrey turns out, as that would be the nearest to me... what about you?
2014 applicant here ;D on the work exp front, I'd advise looking into cattery/kennels/stable(/vets if you're lucky!) work you can start doing now on a long term basis, e.g. a couple of hours on a Saturday morning - the hours really add up (especially important if you apply to Liverpool) and it shows your commitment

Thanks! I need to balance it with my hockey and the job I have at the moment! But hockey season nearly over now so it should be an issue for the next 6 months!!
Are vets usually fine with people volunteering after school??

Skatealexia already answered but yeah, they're fine with it. At my vet they do consults 9:00-12:00, surgery 12:00-4:00 and then consults again until 7:00 so going from 4:00 is really convenient.
My thread is too quiet at the moment so I'm going to chill here . I've been dairying this week which has been fun. Had a few calves born

Aha, okay, theres a SA by my school, so... Aw, are cow births much more messy then lambing?? Or is it just the size of the cow?!

Oh cool, definitely check that out then The hours will really add up over time. There's a couple of SA practices next to my school but I go to one miles away because I'm a massive idiot it specialises in exotics which are really cool
Both are pretty messy, if I'm honest! Predictably the afterbirth is a lot bigger in cows, though.

Aha, exotics would be fun! Do you ever have to deal with spiders?? Okay, yeah that would make sense!
Just a couple of questions. From others experiences how much work experience have people at your uni for vet med done? Does it vary greatly? Also do you think doing a vet med based EPQ at Sixth Form would be a good idea? Thanks!

Varies a lot
Tbh the unis don't take EPQ massively into consideration much, a vet med based one ain't a bad idea but it wouldn't be the end of the world if you didn't
