UNIX systems admin module help required

Hi everyone :-)
I am currently completing a module entitled "UNIX systems administration", and in order to do so I require the use of the Linux operating system. In order to do so, I have to emulate a Linux machine via a piece of Windows software known as "Oracle VM VirtualBox."
This, however, is the crux of the problem since I'm not too confident in what I am doing when I try to set it up. I currently have a VDL file called "Debian", which was what my university provided to me; what should I do with such a file? I've tried booting it into a virtual machine, but after initial loading past the BiOS screen I am presented with nothing but a blank parser (and I can't provide any input which invokes a response, so a reset is my only option).
If anyone at all can help then I would be so, so grateful!! :-D
